Alternatives for Adderall during BFing...

XP from BFing...

Hi ladies-

I was diagnosed with symptoms of ADD/ADHD about 6 months prior to getting pregnant and was put on Adderall. Once I knew we were going to begin trying to get PG, I stopped taking it. I don't know if the hormones helped or what, but I never had any severe symptoms while being off of it- however, now I'm really starting to see them come back (can't make my brain stop going at night, difficulty focusing, etc).

I know that Adderall is not an option while BFing, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this diagnosis and had success with anything that is safe to take while nursing? I'm going to talk to my Dr but just wanted to check in and see if anyone else had any good suggestions for me to talk through with her?  TIA!

Re: Alternatives for Adderall during BFing...

  • I am no longer BFing but I was planning on it and before getting pg I was taking wellbutrin for anxiety. My main problem was getting my brain to just shut off and add issues. I had been on it since high school and it worked well for me. My doctor said it was safe during BFing and I am back on right after birth.

Thanks for your note, I was wondering about this as an option. I'd heard mixed reviews on it being ok for nursing, but I think the majority land on the side of it being ok, so definitely something to consider.

  • Wellbutrin worked well for my ADD.  I did get bad dry mouth and started to have issues with sleep that made it harder with than without.

There are a lot of different meds out there now, adderall is a standard first choice.  Work with your doctor to see what other options you have.

  • One of our doctors told me ritalin is a good choice for breastfeeding.  I would talk to your pedi etc about it.  I used to take provigil but got off of it before pregnancy and it isn't considered ok during breastfeeding, a stimulant is a better idea so I might need to get on one-- I have a sleep disorder.
