How much noise do you make during the day while baby is trying to nap (ie. vacuum, blender, choppers, ect.)? I know you don't want to be completely silent, but to me you should apply some common sense to nap time. I'm generally pretty quite because I'm alone, but when my wonderful husband comes home from traveling for 4 days a week he's really loud. He does this because his mother told him that your baby should be able to sleep while you continue on with your day like normal and there is no need to change anything. I'm not sure but, I think my husband is taking this idea a little to literal. Please, I really would like to know what kind of things do you do while baby is napping? Should I be making more noise? Because it just seems very natural to not make a lot of noise.
Re: question/vent combo
I just go about my day as I would normally. If I need to vacuum, I do-- and he sleeps right through it. I always have the TV on and it never seems to bother him either.
my read shelf:
DD sleeps SOO much better during the day when there are things going on than at night when it's quiet!! I don't filter myself at all. This morning I vacuumed, ran the dryer, used the blender to make my lunch smoothie, used the sewing machine, all while she had the radio on in her room. (and yes her hearing is fine, I have had it checked numerous times, not because I was concerned, but because I have access to the equipment to do so and I'm a nerd.) She has just always been a good sleeper through noise and commotion.
In fact, if we try to play her lullabye cd at night, the minute the CD stops she wakes up. (We need to switch CD players, the one in our room doesn't have the "repeat" option so we just switch to radio.
I have to admit that my LO sleeps better when it's noisy as well, although sometimes the dog barking makes him jump without waking. That being said, if mine woke up to noise like yours does, I'd be pretty crabby about people being loud during nap time as well. If it's waking the baby, it shouldn't be happening because LO's need their sleep.
I also make plenty of noise. She sleeps in the swing in the livingroom. I vacuum, keep the TV loud, etc.
I have actually read that noise is comforting to most newborns. They are used to so much noise in the womb and then if they are put in a silent, still environment it is overwhelming to them. This is part of the philosophy of the doctor who wrote Happiest Baby on the Block, who seems to be widely respected and non controversial like some of the other baby book authors.

I have a 2 year old also...so it is loud when DD is napping. Otherwise I do whatever needs done. I don't try to keep quiet.
I do hold her as often as I can, which means most of the time.
