Anyone take LO for a blood test yet?

I took Sam for blood work this morning and it was not fun. 3 needle pokes and 2 labs and 1 baby vomit all over the floor later, they finally got what they needed. Needless to say, I felt horrible. Anyway, she has been so lethargic all day since then and has a slight fever (99.9)...is this normal? I know she could be lethargic because of all of the crying and vomitting, but what's up with the slight fever? What was your LO like after they drew blood?

Re: Anyone take LO for a blood test yet?

  • We did the blood test for lead at 1 year. It was awful! We had to go to the hospital, and those women were not very good with kids. I wish our pedi's nurse could have done it. She is so good with him. They didn't even talk to him or anything. He was freaked out and they couldn't get it from his arm, so they did a heel prick (this was before he was walking). It took like 10 minutes to get enough blood squeezed out of his poor little foot. He just layed on the table and cried. It was terrible! I just wanted to share that you are not alone with the bad experience. I dont know about your LO's symptoms though...I hope everything is ok!

  • We did blood work shortly before his 12 month appointment.  It was incredibly traumatic.  They took 3 vials I think.  I don't know that he had a fever but he wasn't himself for the rest of the day.

  • We had it at 9 months for allergy testing and again at 12 months for iron store testing.  Both times it was terrible, awful, and horrible.  I'm so sorry that LO and you had to go through that.  Both times were in the evening so he just went to bed shortly after.  He was fine in the morning except for definite soreness in his arms.  I'm not sure about the fever though.  Even though it isn't too high, maybe you might check with your pedi's office just because of the recent draw?  I doubt the draw could affect it at all, but I guess it can't hurt to check.

  • Thanks ladies. She just woke up from a nap a few hours ago with a temp of 101.7. I have her some more "little fevers" and she seems to be feeling a little better. If her temp is still up, I'll call her pedi in the morning.

As for the lab experience, if the lab tech wasn't confident in taking her blood, then she should have just said so instead of sticking my baby twice. I would have like to jab the needle in her eye! Anyway, thankfully the next lab tech was awesome. I'll never go back to Quest...they suck!!!

  • Alexander went and it was pretty bad. They took 6 vials of blood from him, and had to wiggle it several times to keep it flowing. Then the lady said, can you get him to stop screaming so the blood will flow? Haha, if I could get him to stop screaming at will, my life would be a whole lot easier!

But that being said, as soon as the needle was out and he cried for a few minutes while I held him, he was back to his normal self. I think he dozed in his car seat for a few minutes, but when I brought him home he acted like himself and did not have a fever.

Could it be just a coincidence, and maybe he just has a little cold right now?

  • They tried to draw blood on LO at his 12 month appointment, but the nurse couldn't find a vein apparently.  She said we would just try again at 18 months.  Did that happen to anyone else?  It also happened to my friend who takes her LO to the same pedi and I feel like it's a little strange.
