Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How did you know LO was ready for ditch the crib?

DD has been "putting herself to bed" for the past two weeks.  We give her a nighttime bottle, she turns around and kisses me, and then she gets off my lap and goes to her crib until Daddy goes in and picks her up and puts her in there.  Then she just falls alseep.

She's only 16mo old.  She's still non-vocal.  She'll still roll up on the sides of the crib when she's sleeping.  But she STTN consistently since she was about 5mo (besides when she had her broken/casted leg).

I'm only wondering this because #2 is on the way.  DD#1's crib doesn't convert to a toddler bed; only a full size bed.  Kiddos will be sharing a room and a full size bed plus a crib won't fit in the small room.  It never even crossed my mind that DD#1 would be ready for a BED by the time DD#2 came along, so we were just planning on buying a 2nd crib.  But now I'm thinking DD#1 might be ready for a bed sooner than I'd ever thought and we could just get her a toddler bed and have DD#2 in the crib.

Thoughts?  Especially if you 2u2 sharing a room.

TIA!

Oli slept on a cot at daycare without problems for 3 months. So, 3 days ago, I put him on a cot at night at home and voila! he did ok. 2nd night, he did better. Last night, I put him on the queen bed in our guest bedroom and he did good. So, we're ditching the crib. It's taking up well needed space in my house.

Edie still sucks at naps.  I'd be willing to buy a cot for MIL's (she does our DC) because I recently saw they are pretty inexpensive.  But it's kind of a fight to get her to nap.

I guess my "plan" is kind of backwards if she still sleeps in a PnP during the day and a bed at night.

  • I'm not sure a twin and a crib would both fit in the room.  We weren't supposed to be living in this house with two kids!  Dang economy/real estate market.

Tessa sleeps on a cot at daycare and loves it. She takes great naps there. I'm just afraid of her waking up in the night and realizing she can leave her bed.

This is what I thought. We put the video monitor in there and closed the door. He never even tried to leave it till he was ready to get up in the morning.

We're still using her video monitor and recently upgraded!  Ha!  And, her bedroom doorknob is broken.  YOu have to push UP on it to get it open, whereas the rest of the doorknobs in the house go down.  So she can't figure it out.  Sooo, I guess she's imprisoned in there (by accident).  But we always wake up as soon as she does.  She's a good sleeper (KNOCK ON ALL THE WOODS) so it's never really been a problem.

She's tall and probably COULD get out of the crib if she wanted to.  But there's never really been a need, I guess.
