Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone have 17 month old not saying Mommy

My DS has words for so many things but not Mama! He consistently says Dada, kitty, and Vuva (for Lola the dog). He says Momo when he wants more food, but says this to anyone feeding him at the time, so it's not a variation of Mama. AND it just goes to show he can pronounce Mama. My DH always says, here's Mama, let's go get Mama, Mama's home, etc.

I'm so glad his vocab has picked up in the last week from 5 or so words to about 20 now, but really? Really?

  • My SIL said her sons never said Mom until they were 2 or 3 years old.

DS just started saying "mum" while signing it. When he is really upset, in his babbling, he'll say "mamamamamamamamamamamama."

  • DS is 19 months and still says momma.  Everyone keeps saying in the 18-20 month range they get a big word explosion.  DS says about 15 words.  The pedi isn't concerned.  I just seem some ladies say their LO are saying a lot more words.  I guess we will see.

DS doesn't say it often.  I might get it a few times a week if I am lucky.  He apparently says it at DC a lot, but I can count on my 1 hand how many times he has said it around me since he's started to talk.

Edit: I should add though that I am not worried about his speech.  He's talking up a storm and would rather say harder words like dinosaur, or banana than say mommy.

Wow sounds like your little guy has a great vocab!

  • LO seems to say "mmm maa maa" when he sees food.

Hmm, I did BF until 13 months... ;)

He knows who I am though, because he will look for me when DH says "where's mama?"

  • DS is 19 months and doesn't call me anything! He will occasionally say DADA when talking to DH but for the most part we have no names. I am jealous when other moms say they are tired of their LO calling their name because I would do anything to hear it just once.

  • Lia just said "mama" in reference to me last week. She's been saying "Daddy" since about 12m, and has a pretty good vocabulary, but she wasn't calling me anything. When she came out with "mama" last week I just about cried I was so thrilled.
