Tax refund

If you are getting a refund, what are you doing with the money?  Anything exciting?

We're paying back MIL money that she let us borrow for oil 2 years ago (better late than never right??).  We're also putting money aside to get oil in the fall.  I paid off my medical bill from having Audrey.

And we're getting new countertops!!!!  I am so excited!  We decided on quartz and it comes with a "free" stainless steel undermount sink and we'll buy a new faucet, too.  They are coming to do the template sometime next week.  I'll have to post before and after pics when it's done.  I cannot wait!  We got new cabinets over 2 years ago now so this is long overdue.

Re: Tax refund

  • Tree removal....in fact the refund was deposited on the same day the trees came down!

My dad just did new counter top and new floor! I haven't seen it yet but I hear it is fabulous! They did granite and also got a "free" under mount sink (I want one so bad), they spent about $500 on a faucet though....yikes!

  • We haven't done our taxes yet but I am pretending that we are getting money back.  I really hope I am not in for a surprise.  I think we will renew our membership to the zoo and maybe get one for the science center.  I think this is the year I am going to be responsible and boring and pay off the last of our cc debt.

  • I'm using a bit of it to help get the new career off the ground (about 15%), and then all of the rest of it will go into savings.

  • I'm hoping we get something back. Last year we got a federal refund, but had to pay the state. How does that work?

Anyway, if it's not very big, I'll probably set it aside so we can have a tree in our backyard taken down in the spring. If it's more substantial, we'll start getting estimates for getting our house rewired. I would so love to have that checked off the list! It's been plaguing us since we moved in.

  • We're using it for a deposit on a rental house out in CO. Worked out great, DH is there now and we just got the refund today!
  • We are putting it towards a minivan. Now coming up with the rest of it is another story!

Faucets are really expensive!  We're going to Home Depot after work to look at some.  We're definitely not paying $500 though, yowza!

  • Paying off credit cards and putting most in savings.  I know my husband has ideas brewing but I told him yesterday to forget whatever was in the works...ha ha.  We actually need so much for our house but I figure it's safe in savings until we have good plans.

I can get you the name of who they used, local small business not a big box store.

  • Gosh I hope to get a refund. But we never get that much back! Wow. We only end up with 100-200 back. Our financial advisor keeps track of what our deductions are and tries to make sure we are as close to 0 as possible. Probably will go into the general bills fund or save for the summer, who knows. Doing taxes makes me ill b/c I really have to look at how much money goes to taxes and interest payments...sigh.

We're using Rynone out of Waverly.  They did our cabinets, too and we were happy!

  • Thanks June, right now dh has only looked at home depot in person bc we live so close. And then a bunch of places online. But I would love to have him look at some smaller local places for the prices, so let me know when you find out!

Tina, thanks. I'll give dh the dh one info. I just looked at their website and it's probably too far away, but maybe he can get some good ideas from them. He is planning on doing most of the work himself (good luck to us - he is handy but this is his first kitchen project!)
