What's up with the recent popularity of

LINNEA??  I'm not sure if that's how it's really spelled, but regardless, I so want to pronounce it LYN-KNEEE-A and it reminds me of "linear".  It isn't pleasing to the eye or ear for me.  I've heard of at least 4 people name their daughter this in the past 4 months. What gives??

  • It's Swedish and pronounced Lin-nay-uh.  I personally like it.  I think many people are using it to honor Lynn but don't want something that boring.

I think of this too!  I know how it's supposed to be pronounced (my friend has to correct me constantly- it's her daughter's name, too) but every time I look at it I want to put a "KNEE" in the middle.  I've never heard the name before, and now it seems to be EVERY WHERE.  I think it's going to be the new 'it' name.

    Me too. No thanks!

  • I think it's a beautiful name, although I am half-Swedish and that affects my name-preference palette. It is a flower that is in turn named for the famed Swedish scientist Carl Linneaus (who designed the whole taxonomical system). People use the name both after the flower and the botanist.  I love that other countries honor their scientists and artists the way that we in the USA honor our Presidents and statesmen. It is a little weird that you know four baby Linneas, though, unless you know a whole bunch of Swedes.

  • It's on my list to honor my mom, whose MN is Lynn. I think it's a beautiful name. I've only heard it once in real life.

This is the only way I've heard the name pronounced, but I've only heard it on one gal in her mid-20s.  I didn't realize it was growing in popularity.

  • I live and went to college in a huge Scandinavian area. I know quite a few Linneas. It's not popular around here but I'd consider it more classic/common.

I never knew it was "weird" or "different" I guess...lol.

    I think it's pretty.

  • Thankfully, I've never heard this one. I don't like that name at all.

*This!  I see nothing appealing about it

my thoughts exactly.  I would never want to name a child after an ugly pg symptom.

  • I'd say it Lynn-ay-ah. It's ok... I kind of hear linear and am not crazy about the combination of sounds in it.

It's probably a regional thing in terms of popularity. I haven't heard it much around where I live.

  • I also know a few Linnea's and don't think it's a strange name at all. I think it's pretty, even if not exactly my style.

I've only known it to be pronounced lyn-NAY-uh.

  • It's my name, and it's awesome!  Hah.  I don't know any baby Linneas but I know Linneas who are my age and older.  I live in MN, so it's more well known here.  It is pronounced Lin-nay-uh and it is a pink flower that grows in Sweden, named for the botanist who discovered it.  It's interesting that it is getting more popular now, but at least it's not a made up name.

  • It's a Swedish name, and fairly popular over there.  It is probably more common in the Midwest than in the other parts of the US.

Both my mother and maternal grandmother's middle name is Linnea.  There is an accent over the "e", and it is pronounced Lynn-ay-uh.

  • Interesting.  I don't know anyone by this name.  Behind the Name says it's pronounced LEE-ne-ah.  But based on the spelling I'd guess closer to LYNN-e-ah -- sort of like Lydia with an n instead of a d.
  • My neighbor's name is Linnea (Lyn-NAY-uh), and she's like, 65 years old.  I also have a friend whose middle name is Lynnae (Lyn-NAY).  So I've heard it before.  I kind of like it.

I had a friend name her daughter that back in November (I believe she may be of Swedish decent) and I had NEVER heard the name before.  Then a co worker named her daughter that, a friend's sister name her daughter that, and I heard it at the playground the other day.  I was like- Have I missed something here??  I'm thinking that a couple of them may have chosen it as an alternate to Lynn.
