Gassy breastfed baby

I need help

My little guy is coming up two weeks old and he seems really gassy.

He is exclusively breastfed and eating every three hours or so.  I burp him after each feeding.  Two days ago he vomited up what looked like the contents of his tummy and we have a lot of spitup since then.

It seems like when he is awake that his tummy is bothering him.  He pulls his legs up and strains.  He is still passing bowel movements that look mustardy and seedy.  We usually put him on his tummy and pat his back and he farts and that seems to help.

Is this unusual for a breastfed baby?  Is there anything I can do to help avoid giving him gas?

Re: Gassy breastfed baby

  • My DD did EXACTLY as you are saying at the same age, hard to burp also. She vomited for 2 days and I took her to the pedi. She put her on Zantac...it's been awesome!! She burps so much easier now and no vomiting. I also noticed when I pumped and DH gave her a bottle she wasn't as gassy, so I EP now. It could be reflux. No matter how I changed my diet DD was in a lot of pain. Zantac is a life saver for us. If she has a bad day I give her Gripe Water...she passes gas much easier after she has it.

  • As well as what pp said, maybe check LOs latch. He could be gulping down a lot of air as he drinks.

our little girl is also very gassy, and my older girl was too. It peaked at around 10 weeks, and then eased off.

  • Z was really a really gassy baby too.  Try doing running baby.  Sit reclined and put baby face up on your legs.  Make his legs go up and down like he is running.  Then gently press both knees towards his belly.  This got a lot of gas out for Z and he was much more comfortable.

I also eliminated dairy from my diet and it really helped.  He was not lactose intolerant (I added dairy back around 6 months) but it gave him excessive gas.

  • My DD was exactly like this. It was reflux and they put her on Zantac. I also try not to eat dairy or anything really gassy (broccoli, beans, Ect.). I would take him to your Pedi and have him checked out. Good luck!

  • My 3 week old has been the same way for the past two weeks. We're using simethicone drops (PediaCare Gas Relief Drops) as recommended by both my lactation consultant and pediatrician. I don't have to use it at every feeding and try to use it only once a day if she's not super gassy and fussy. I have seen a noticeable difference in my LO.
