I can understand the reason for pocket diapers - being able to stuff more it, dry faster, etc.
I can understand the reason for prefolds and a cover
What I can't understand is the advantage to using a fitted and a cover instead of a prefold and cover or a pocket diaper
Can you help me out? Right now I just have prefolds that were given to me... I'm researching all the other options since I know we should have multiple kinds.
Thanks!
Re: Advantage to Fitteds?
Great for newborns when out and about (easier than a prefold) or at night when they start to sleep longer than 2 hours (fitted could last 5 hours for nighttime use)
Our LO is 9 months now and they are our go-to nighttime diaper. Better at not leaking than a pocket (for us), since she likes to roll around in her sleep.

The absorbency is really the key difference. My LO is in her ON diaper 12 hours with no leaks. We use an ON fitted with a hemp doubler. PFs generally have a 2 hour max limit by themselves.
During the NB stage, fitteds are great for containing runny poo. This means you need less covers.
Personally, pockets are my least favorite type of CD.
Showing my newbie-ness here... what does ON stand for? I've figured out most abbreviations, and used the link on FAQ for others, but didn't find this... thanks!
And thanks for your input! I really appreciate it!

ON = overnight
Fitted absorbancy depends a LOT on the brand/type. I used a lot of GMD infant fitteds when my baby was new, but he outgrew the absorbancy by 7 weeks. Rather than change every hour, we moved up to our pocket stash. Personally, I'm not a fan of fitteds past newborn. I bought some and will sell them when I get around to it.

My advantages for fitteds might seem random, but here they are anyway
1- better fit than prefolds with the elastic. Easier to put on, IMO.
2- good quality fitteds are really absorbent and my kid can wear them through naps and overnight, and he's a heavy wetter.
3- no PUL.
3a- we live in texas and it is HOT. PUL makes my kid's butt sweat like nobody's business, which leads to rashes. fitteds breathe, no butt sweats, no rashes.
3b- I don't have to separate them out of the rest of the diaper laundry because it's no big deal if they go through the dryer.
Like I said, kind of random, but after nearly 1 year of cloth its those little things that I appreciate.
PS we don't put a cover over his fitteds if we're home, or going out rocking just the diaper and t-shirt or something. We just watch him closely for when he needs changed. We're lazy/cool like that.
