Babies: 0 - 3 Months

soy babies....

ok so my baby had bad diarrhea for weeks bad gas  for hours and would cry when we feed him and we told the doc that my husbands family is mostly lactose intolerant she said that he might be too so we switched over to soy formula. he seams to be doing much better but the poop im not sure if it normal. i looked it up and they say it should be the consistency of peanut butter. we checked and a a bit harder than that but hes pooping little turds. he crys just a little when he poops but once he gets that first one out he seams fine  so my question is is it constipation is this normal for soy babies is it just him adjusting to the new formula? hes 1 month old and we switched on sunday thanks for your help

Re: soy babies....

  • DS was a soy baby and had issues with constipation until we started solids.  It wasn't a constant thing, but it definitely affected him.

  • We switched ds a week ago and his poop is much better wince switching.  He went from very loose to soft poop.  Not constipated at all.

My older ds was on soy too and he always had constipation.  Not sure if it was from the soy or just the way he was.  We used to put a little prune juice in his bottle to help loosen things up.  You could ask his pedi if you think he is constipated.  There are different things you can try from prune juice to karo syrup.

  • We put DD on soy formula recently, since I'd head it was easier on the tummy, and she's a gassy girl. Her poops definitely look like peanut butter sometimes, or as I call it butterscotch pudding. We do lots of laying her on her back and doing bicycle legs to try and coax the gas out, and she seems alright. She definitely does strain a little bit when she's trying to go though.
