Feeding on demand?

What are your thoughts on it? Pros? Cons?

Right now we are waking my 10 day old every 2 hours to feed him.  Sometimes we'll let him sleep til he wakes up, just to see how long he'll go and he'll sleep 3+ hours at a time, then wake up and eat 2.5-3oz.  When we wake him to feed him he only eats about an ounce. Sometimes 1.5oz.

Is it too early to start feeding only when HE says? How do you feed and why?

Re: Feeding on demand?

  • My pedi said as soon as they get back to or over birth weight then to start feeding on demand so they get used to sleeping in longer more restful stretches

  • I feed on demand because that is what seems natural to me & my pediatrician told me that is what's best to do. LO has had no problems with weight so I suppose I'm doing something right ;]

  • Once your LO is at or above is birthweight you can feed on demand.  I wont let her go more than 3 hours during the day though.

  • I've fed both of mine on demand once they were over their birth weight.  I never let them go 4 hours between feedings until they were over 2 months though.

  • My LO is 9 days old and my pedi said to feed him on demand during the day, but don't go more than 4 hours and to let him sleep till he's hungry at night. He usually wants to eat every 3 hours and takes between 2-3 ounces. He was 8 pounds at his appointment yesterday, 7 pounds 14 ounces at birth
