Dry scalp on toddlers

DS has (what I believe to be) a horrible dry scalp. It just started up about 3 weeks ago. At first, it was just on one spot on his head. Now, it covers the entire top of his head. He scratches it fairly regularly to the point that he has some scabs on his head. I've been putting baby oil on his head several times a week, letting it soak in for an hour or so before washing it out, and also using Neutrogena t-gel shampoo 2-3 times a week. It doesn't seem to be getting much better. Sad

Has anyone dealt with this at all? Any products you could recommend?

Re: Dry scalp on toddlers

  • Molly will get patches of dry skin on her head, almost like cradle cap, and I will brush in some coconut oil. It clears  up really fast. A little goes a long way and her hair is a little greasy that night but it works well so it's worth it.

ETA: Coconut oil is also a anti bacterial, microbial and fungal so it's great for scratches and stuff like that. We use it for all kinds of things in our home though.

  • We have the same problem, though not as bad. He doesn't scratch at it, but he does have a dry scalp, just like his daddy. I just try not to wash his hair everyday unless absolutly necessary. We live in a very dry state so I don't want to make it work. I haven't tried anything other than baby oil either.
  • We use California Baby Tea Tree and Lavender shampoo and it's great. Not drying and it clears up whatever dry skin might be there already.
  • I am having this exact problem and have been trying a number of things.  I started using tea tree shampoo with lavendar.  I also bought some california baby conditioner for sensitive scalp that you can rise out or leave in, I'm leaving it in for now.  I've been adding a little Burt's Bees oil to the bath.  When I do put oil directly on his head, it seems to help but then his hair is oily.  I can't say for sure if this all his helping yet.  It does seem like he doesn't have the red, raised bumps quite as much but it's still clearly white and dry and he's scratching at it.  But it's only been a week since I started with these new products.  I've also been going 2-3 days between baths instead of just 2.  Poor little guy.
