Daycare questions....

So, I am going to say that I am terrified to leave my child with someone that I don't know....but Momma's gotta go back to work 6 weeks after, so adjustments in my mindset will have to take place....and soon!

I still don't have a daycare provider (mine dropped out....boo hiss....)  So, I am on the road again, searching for the perfect place for my little boy to spend his days.

I had an appt to meet with someone tomorrow night, but I think I might back out since I heard from my grandma that lives across the street from the woman that her husband doesn't speak english and she sits outside and smokes all day.... Unreasonble of me????  Not sure...

I have called another person today who "sounds" promising....but who the heck knows?  I mean, I will call their references, but of course they're not going to give me names and numbers of people that they had a bad experience with.

How did you do it?  How do you choose?  Can anyone provide me with some questions to ask in my interviews?

Thanks!

Re: Daycare questions....

  • Does your state insepct daycares?  If so, I would start by looking at the inspection reports.

I would assume.... I am looking for in home care though, so I am not sure if they do that..... ????

If they are licensed or registered as a daycare provider, they might.  Texas does.

  • Those concerns are exactly the reason I didn't even consider an in-home provider.  Take a look at a center.

If they are licensed you should be able to pull up names of places/providers and their inspection reports on your state website.  We ended up going with a center but really carefully considered some in-home providers but only if they were licensed.

If they are licensed, they should. We have a fantastic in-home provider that is licensed.   We found ours through a friend. Do you know anyone you could ask?

The smoking thing would disqualify someone for me. I wouldn't care if the husband wasn't english speaking though.

In the end, trust your gut. We learned that with our first daycare experience and I'm incredibly glad we switched to a much better place.

    yeah.

Also, if they are smoking then I would not choose them as a provider.

  • Va does inspect licensed daycares. Don't leave your child with someone who is not licensed. You should be able to find the licensing authority with a little google search. They will have listings of any violations. They ofcourse should be CPR certified. You can also check care.com and sittercity.com.
