Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How are you getting lo to sleep longer?

Hi Mommys'

So I noticed that most of our babies are drinking about the same amount of formula but my DD is up every two hours!! :-D  While most of your DD & DS are up every 3 or 4 hours.  Are you guys doing anything special to have your DD & DS sleep longer.  DH goes back to work tomorrow, so I'd love to be able to get an extra hour or two of sleeping between feedings.  I try to give DD the paci in between feedings but she spits it out or it falls out of her mouth.

Any advice???

Thanks

  • First thing I notice is your baby was a couple weeks early, so she's probably still behind a bit and can't really be compared yet to babies that reached 40+ weeks developmentally.  While it won't make any difference before much longer, it still does now.  Is she still acting hungry after she eats at all?  Regardless, at a couple weeks old, up every 2 hours is more than normal.

This exactly! My DD was born at 36wks 1 day although that's only 6days shy of full term it makes a huge difference. Pedi says once they hit their original due date everything should pretty much even out. If you think about it from your ticker your LO shouldn't quite be here yet...FWIW DD is on schedule now after a few of weeks of NO SLEEP. GL!!

Thank you ladies so much for the support!!!  DD is still acting hungry after I feed her.  I kept wondering if I'm over feeding her but the pedi said to feed her when she wants to eat, I guess b/c she did come 3 weeks early and was only 5lbs.  She should have been here today (Tues) which was my due date.  I hope things get better.  Thanks again.

  • I didn't do anything to get LO to sleep longer. I feed him when he's hungry and eventually he spaced the feedings out on his own. My son was born 2-3 weeks early and started spacing his feedings out past 2-3 hours around 6 weeks of age. With that said, every baby is different.

  • I would just continue to feed on demand and don't worry about overfeeding because chances are she won't let that happen.  Eventually she'll eat more at once that will enable her to go longer stretches.  Our pedi has recommended with both kids (ds was ff, dd is fed breast milk in a bottle) that we put a half ounce more in the bottle than they will eat.  When they finish that consistently, bump it up another half ounce.  At only 3 weeks, it's far too early to have a set schedule for when they eat.  I always think of it like this.  I don't only eat my meals at 7, noon, and 5 so why should babies only eat at very specific times?

You can also try a pacifier with a different nipple.  I found out with dd that she needed a fuller nipple in order for her to take one.
