s/o screaming: 7 wk old screaming during BFing

For the past few days, DD has been screaming bloody murder when I try to switch sides during BFing.  Prior to this she would take a full feeding by nursing on both sides.  We were just getting the hang of things, too.  What could possibly be wrong?  I burp her after each side.

Re: s/o screaming: 7 wk old screaming during BFing

  • That is to crazy, because my son is doing this too. I just posted the same thing, but I mentioned that he does it when I burp him halfway through a bottle, but he also does it while breastfeeding too. I am at a complete loss. I have not idea why he is doing this. He doesn't seem to be in any pain because when I call his name or get his attention, by shhhhh, shhhing him, he will stop and look at me for a second. I was thinking it could be a behavioral thing because at the beginning when he was only drinking 2 oz we really didn't stop him all that often, but now that his is eating 4 oz, he really needs to be burped in the middle of the bottle.

What do you mean by "behavioral"?  Like he's mad because you took him off the bottle?

DD only gets upset when I try to get her to latch on.  Previously she'd just keep her lips shut tight, but now she screams.  And its funny because she still moves her head back and forth a little like she's trying to find the nipple.  AND if I rock her to sooth her while this is happening she will calm down enough to latch on.  Its really starting to worry me and I'm going to call my LC tomorrow.

  • Yeah, I am looking for the simplest explanation and I'd rather it be something like he just doesn't like being burped rather then something physiological like GRED or Reflux. I have heard of babies who hate the bath or being dresses, why couldn't it just be that our babies hate having there meals interrupted to be burped. I just finished feeding our LO and I talked to him the whole time while I burped him. He still screamed, but it could have been a little better. Not sure, but I can't come up with another logical explanation. Do you have a guess, based on the behavior/symptoms you're seeing? Please tell me if you find anything out tomorrow. I'll continue checking this thread to hear what you LC said.

Hi, sorry it took so long to respond if you even read this.  DD has only done the screaming thing one other time and it was this morning.  The only thing I could think of was that she had a stuffy nose and can't breathe while she's nursing so she gets upset.  She often wakes up with a stuffy nose so I'm going to make sure to suction her if needed.  I hope you figure out what's wrong with your little guy.  It could be reflux or gas.  When he screams does he arch his back?  Does he spit up massive amounts?  This could be reflux.  If not, you may want to try some Mylicon gas drops just to see if it helps.  I hope it gets better soon!
