heartbroken: can anyone help me with this?

We found out yesterday that good friends of DH's lost their 6yr old DD yesterday. She had headaches and vomiting for a few days and it was discovered that she had bleeding in her brain. She did not survive the surgery to try and fix this. The father is one of the guys that my DH just came back from a snowboarding trip with. This has all happened in the last 5 days since they returned and my DH & I can't wrap our heads around that. I am so heartbroken for our friends and keep crying all day.

Can anyone help with these emotions? I dunno, maybe I'm just looking for a place to talk this afternoon.

Oh wow, I couldn't imagine losing one of my boys. Do they know what caused the bleeding in her brain?

No, we don't have any answers to that yet. What's hard for me is another friend's 3yr old went through this 2yrs ago and it was so scary. He made an unbelievable recovery from brain surgery and I never thought I would ever have to get a phone call from a friend with anything as hard as that. I now realise how lucky he was. I never thought he wouldn't come through it. And now I'm feeling the hurt of the fact that some children don't.

That is just devastating!  I am so so sorry.  I think it's only natural that you would be grieving.

If this family is as close to you as you make it sound, I would be surprised if the news didn't upset you.  What a horrible thing to happen.

I'm not sure anyone can say anything to make you feel 'better.'  It's one of those horrible things that is very hard to understand why one LO can recover from something so devastating, and yet another LO just can't.  Unfortunately it may be that only time can heal this wound.  In the mean time, I hope you can find comfort knowing that we will all be thinking of your family and your friends, and that you can come here to unload your feelings anytime...

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear about the death of this sweet girl.  I know her family and friends are absolutely devastated.  I'm so sorry for all to be going through this and please know we're here for you, like all of the PPs said.  I will keep this family in my prayers.

How absolutely heartbreaking... My stomach hurts from hearing this I can't even begin to imagine how you feel, let alone the family of this poor baby girl.

I'm so very sorry My thoughts and prayers are with this family! Everything that you are feeling is completely normal. It's a normal human reaction, and especially a normal mom reaction. It's okay to feel heartbroken for the family, it's okay to feel hearbroken that there are children who have to suffer in this way, it's even okay to feel heartbroken at just the thought of what you would ever do or how you would ever live life without your children. No parent should ever have to go through what they are going through right now... and they need friends like you and YH to be with them and support them. Use your grief to reach out to them, comfort them, meet some of the needs they might have right now. Even if you aren't as close to the wife as your H is to her H, I am sure they would still appreciate your willingness to serve them in some way (a couple frozen meals? Gift cards for dinner out or groceries? Offer to watch their other kids (if they have them)? Offer to set up or tear down or serve food to family if they have anything like that following the funeral?) I know you will always feel sadness over this and will always have a tender spot in your heart when you reflect on this child and this situation, but give yourself time and you'll start to feel better.

Thank you to all of you for your kind words of support, for myself, and for our friends. I have spent today thinking of ways I can be useful here - like practical things I can do to help. This will help them as well as me. The funeral will be Saturday and I'll cross that bridge when I have to come to it (gulp).
