umbilical cord fell off what should it look like?

my sons umbilical cord has just fallen off and there still a bit of black scab left in there? it also looks a bit gunky and greenish inside? is this normal or should it just be like a normal belly button?

DS's belly button was so gross!  I just wet a q-tip and cleaned the area a little bit, and after a day or 2 it looked much better.

sounds like there is still a little piece left.  My pedi said to put a little dab of alcohol on 2 times a day to help the rest of it come off.  A couple of days late she was "free" and could take a bath.

When my LOs came off it looked a little funky.  We were going back to the pedi for a weight check anyway so I asked her to check it.  She ended up putting some silver nitrate on it to make it dry up completely.  Now her little belly button is perfect!

Man, my DS still has his but it is barely hanging on though.  It seems that he had a think umbilical cord that is why it is taking some time to fall off.
