Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Need advice about crib/toddler/double bed..

DD will be 20 months on Sunday and she is still happy in her crib and has never tried to climb out (not a big climber at all). Baby #2 is due to arrive at the end of August so DD will be 26 months and DH and I are unsure on if we should:

a- leave DD in her crib since she does good in it and buy baby #2 their own crib even if this means that DD might only use her crib for a few months after new baby arrives but then we can convert into a day bed and then double later on.

b- put DD in a toddler bed before baby#2 gets here and use the crib for the new baby.

c- put DD in a double bed so new baby can have the crib and since we have to use the guest room for the nursery, we will need to get rid of the double or use it for DD. We now have the guest room downstairs but are using a futon.

As per your experience with transitioning your LO out of the crib, what has worked best for you? TIA!

  • We're in a similar boat. I think we're going to switch DS to a bed in the next couple of months rather than buy a second crib. He'll have time to get used to it before the new baby comes.

  • I would transition your LO to a regular bed a few months before the new baby arrives.  maybe the beginning of summer?  You just don't want her to think she's being kicked out because of the baby (then she might resent the new baby).  We switched DD right before her 2nd birthday and it was actually relatively drama free.  Good luck.
