Does your little man have a hernia?

Our pedi told us ds has a hernia near his groin which is "common" among boys. He said you can see it swell when he strains (so crying, passing gas, or pooping). The pedi won't do surgery until 6 months and it probably won't go away on its own before then.

Last night and today DS has had some pretty bad gas and I am scared it is hurting his hernia. Has there been anything your doc has said to look for in order to start worrying about the hernia? Our doc was very vague. It is going to be a long 6 months...

Thanks!

Re: Does your little man have a hernia?

  • My friend's daughter had a hernia and she had the surgery around 6 months. It went very well. I don't think a hernia causes pain but if you are worried, call the doctor. Don't allow him to be vague, ask specific questions.

  • Mine son had a hernia.  He has actually had his surgery to repair it already.  He had it done at about 2 months old.  I was told that they do not go away on their own and the risk of further complications is high.  Therefore, they wanted to do surgery on my son right away.  It was an easy surgery and a quick recovery.  If I were you, I would probably question the pedi more about it.
