DS has sore on gums

So about a week or so ago, Landon started fighting harder when I brushed his teeth. I just thought it was a phase and kept going. Earlier this week I noticed a white sore on his upper lip. It doesn't seem to bother him unless I am brushing his teeth. I get those at times and was not too concerned.

Tonight when I got the brush out, he started crying. So I lay him across the bathroom counter to brush his teeth (since he was resisting). When he opened his mouth, I noticed more sores around his top teeth, like behind them and between them. I noticed his gums look inflammed. I stopped and just let him go to bed.

So my question is, what should I do? Should I take him to pedi or make a dentist appointment? He has not been to the dentist yet. Also, should I just rub his teeth with a washcloth (like you do as infants) or keep brushing?

TIA

Re: DS has sore on gums

  • Personally, I would probably make an appointment with the Pedi just to check up on the situation.  From your description, it sounds like it is spreading, so hopefully the doctor could prescribe something, or at least give you some suggestions on how to deal.

No I do not recall seeing any, but he is asleep right now and I cam afraid to wake him!! I know coxsakie causes a fever, and he did run last week. BUT he was diagnosed with type A flu, so assumed it was from that!

  • my now 9 yr old had it when he was younger but he only had the sores in his mouth. so it could very well be that. does your ds go to daycare or is he around other children where he could have picked it up from?

Yes he does go to daycare, but he has not been there since last Monday due to having the flu!

  • oh ok. in the meantime, i'd just stay away from any foods or drinks that may irritate the sores. poor little guy! i'm prone to canker sores and having one kills me! i'm cant imagine having more than one sore! if he seems to be in pain from it, you may want to try some baby oragel (spelling, once again! lol) to help numb the pain. hth
