How much independent play time?

How much time a day would you say your LO gets of independent play time? I know it's important for their development in various ways. I was talking to some friends and some seemed to let their LO play ALL day by themselves, others almost none at all. Just wondering what you all are doing...

Re: How much independent play time?

  • During her first two waketimes she's generally happier, so she has longer independent playtimes, probably about 30-60 minutes of her 2-hour waketimes (not all at once; we break it up a bit. And of course it depends on her mood). When she wakes up from her second nap around 3:30, she usually needs more one-on-one attention, and may only play by herself for 15 minutes before fussing. After her short evening nap she wakes around 6, and rarely has independent playtime from there until bedtime. Either DH or I will come home from work/school (depending on the day), and will play until 7 when we start bedtime routine. She goes to bed at 8 pm.

  • Mine virtually REFUSES to play independently and it's a problem. It doesn't matter if we're in the same room or even right next to her. She wants to be held all.the.time. I'm starting to lose my mind a bit, honestly.

  • I don't really time it. He plays by himself and with Ian a lot.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.

This is very similar to our schedule.

Hugs, mama, we are in the same boat. I'm exhausted,d my mom (who watches her now that I am back at work) is exhausted. It's brutal. And she will only nap when being held. She has taken 3, only 3 naps in her crib in her life. Every other time it is hwy me or my mom is holding her. I need to do some sleep training but I don't have the heart t d it quite yet.

  • Not sure what qualifies as "independent" play time. For instance, DD sits in her highchair and watches me while I'm doing the dishes. So while I'm not engaging her, I'm still with her, YKWIM? With that being said, I can say I really play with her for maybe an hour a day and really let her play on her own for another hour. The rest of the time, I'm with her but not really playing (like we're running errands, for instance)
