Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

lo vomiting - advice please.

he was eating very little the past 3 days and started vomiting yesterday.  Any advice?  This has never happened before, he is still nursing, but vomited it up this morning.  Not sure if I should just be nursing or offering more solids.

He has thrown up 3 times, the last time was yellowish.

Re: lo vomiting - advice please.

  • Do you have a pediatrician that offers a 24/7 nurse line? I would call if possible. I know breast is best, but I'm not sure if dairy in your diet could affect him when he has an upset stomache? I know for toddlers breast milk can help keep them hydrated, but if they're not being breastfed they usually avoid milk products....so I'm not sure.

  • Stop nursing or giving him food. I'm dealing with round 4 or 5 of vomiting toddler this weekend. They yellowish is bile b/c there's no more food left in his belly. Get some pedialyte and offer sips every 10 minutes or so. He may not be ready to even hold that down. Any sort of milk will just upset the belly. When he's gone a few hours w/o throwing up, offer some BRAT diet foods.... Banana Rice Apple sauce Toast. I had my daughter on that diet yesterday, and water and pedialyte, and today she can handle heavier foods. Watch the diaper. That is a clue if he's dehydrated or not. Even if it's just a little pee, that's a good sign. The pedialyte will help with the dehydration.

  • We've had 2 bouts of gastro go through our house in the last 2 months.  This link was really helpful.  There are different stages of vomiting, and you need to know what stage your LO is in to determine what type of nourishment to give him.  Breastmilk is OK to continue with because it is easily digested, but cow's milk is a definite no.

  • My LO has it too - pedi said no dairy at all for 4 days, and keep the kid drinking. This is his second time with tummy trouble and soy milk seems to help with the diarrhea and the milk tantrums.
