What will our kids' generation be known for?

I've been thinking a lot about how "entitled" kids seem and how annoyed today's parents/teachers/etc. are by it.  Some of it may be age on our part.  Just your normal "kids these days" attitude that kind of happens as you get older.  But I really do think the generation coming up is partially a product of a combination of a good economy ("mom and dad can afford to buy me shiit") and of a collecitve parenting style that consisted of teaching kids that they're awesome and should be confident in everything, always.

But I feel like parents of our generation are a little disgusted by how that's played out as these kids have become teens, college students, and started entering the work force.

Will we take these lessons to heart?  Do you think we'll raise our kids to be a little less self-centered?  It looks like this recession/poor economy will have eaten up the better part of a decade before it's truly over...what impact will that have?

Yes, I'm totally bored of debating abortion, politics, religion, etc.  Can we just talk about how likely it is that we'll totally_fvck up our kids?

  • This doesn't answer your questions, but kind of is on the same page.  I feel like a lot of kids today don't understand or care about basic survival skills.  But I also think thats true for our generation as well.  I sometimes think about the blackout we had in 2003.  I feel like if that were to happen in like 30-40 years from now, all hell would break loose.

What is our generation known for?

  • I supervise new people right out of school.  There is a mark on my wall where I throw things when I get frustrated with them.  They all think they are the cat's meow and that they know everything.  They have egos up the wa-zoo and are too important to listen to how things need to be done.

I call them the google generation.  They want the yes/no answer now and they don't want any understanding of WHY.  The problem is- without knowing the WHY they keep making the same mistakes.  Bu their mommies and daddies told them they were wonderful a million times and they got trophies when they lost or when they won in sports growing up so, to them, it doesn't matter if they screw up.

Sorry to younger people on this board- obviously it is not everyone- there are many mature young people.  It is just an overall trend I see more and more with people right out of school.  It's only when they get (figuratively not literally) slapped down a few times that some of them start to wisen up.

Ok- back to your question.  I think kids today will have trouble as adults with social interaction.  Face to face conversations and the ability to write a sentence with proper grammar, punctuation and spelling will decline for many.  I think technology is taking us in a direction of less social interaction and as a result, people will feel more isolated.  Think of 50 years ago when people wrote beautiful love letters to each other and think of the last e-mail you got from someone.  Language itself is in decline.   On the plus side though, kids of the next generation will be more aware of the world around us and our world will continue to get smaller - kids will learn more languages, recognize and accept differences (hopefully) and not understand how we could treat people of different races, ethnicities, sexual orientation and gender differently- we are 100 times better than the generation before us and they will be 100 times better than we are.   They will also complain about the generation to follow them...assuming there is a 2013 and beyond of course :)
