BFing moms, talk to me about freezing supply

Hi ladies,

I exclusively pump and so I have quite a supply going in my fridge. I have a number of bottles in my freezer full of BM that I would like to now put in the bags. Can I unfreeze this milk and then refreeze it again in the bags? How do you go about using your supply of milk? Do you freeze whatever you pump for the day and then only give frozen milk? I am unsure how to go about doing this so that it makes the most sense.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • No, you can't thaw then refreeze.  It is because of bacteria.  I am still just freezing, I haven't started using my stash yet, but I think I will have to soon.  I will just use a few bags a day, but make sure I give a fresh bottle or 2 while I can.  Fresh is best.

  • I also EP. I don't freeze anything unless I have enough extra. I keep about 2-3 bottles ready in the fridge depending on the time of day. They can stay in the fridge for about a week I've read (depending where you put them!) and I just rotate them.  And if he is going to eat soon, then I just give him the bottle straight off the pump!

  • Fresh is better than frozen so I would only serve fresh unless I need to (I EP for DS also - now I'm serving pumped milk during the day and nursing overnight for DD).

You can defrost and then refreeze.  If you defrost it you have 24 hours to serve it or else its no good.  Freeze in bags from now on.... you can serve one or two bottles of frozen a day until you get rid of the bottles.

  • After you thaw frozen milk in the fridge you have 24 hours to use it or you have to pitch it. You are not supposed to refreeze thawed milk. If you thaw it and don't use it you have to toss it.

This. You need to invest in the BM storage bag and freeze in those.

  • If I were you I'd use up the frozen stash in bottles and start freezing in freezer bags. I like the Lansinoh ones.
