Tips on giving meds?

DS is 3 months old and EBF. He was just started on Zantac and im having a difficult time getting him to take it. He wont take it straight, of course, and the only way currently i can get him to take it is to mix it with about 1 oz of expressed BM. He usually will only drink a little at a time over about an hour, bc he can prob taste it. I wanted to try and stay away from giving him a whole bottle twice a day just to get him to take the meds. Thats a lot of pumping and lots of extra work :( I dont mind continuing the 1 oz of formula thing, i guess i just wanted to see if anyone else was doing something different that worked?? thanks!

Re: Tips on giving meds?

  • My DD was the same way!! While she was drinking her bottle.. I would take the syringe and put it in the side of her mouth while she was drinking... finally I just put it in her morning bottle (that I knew she would drink all of!)

  • I've had success by giving LO her paci and then moving it aside and squirting a little medicine in her mouth. After she sucks the paci for a minute I give her the rest and keep the paci in her mouth so she swallows it all.

  • I had to give my DD zantac and I just put the syringe in the side of her mouth and into the back and just squirted it in a few times until she had the full dose. She didn't like it and whined, but i had to do it.

  • Use an eyedropper then blow into her mouth, it stimulates the swallowing reflex

  • I put her Zantac in her mouth with a dropper. Her vitamin drops get mixed in her bottle.
