Would you have called the pedi too? Second degree burn

DS got a second degree burn on his hand yesterday. I did exactly what the Dr Sears website says to do for a second degree burn. Then I told DH that that website along with babycenter and webmd all say to call the pedi for a second degree burn especially on the hands. DH said all they're going to do is tell us to put burn cream on it and wrap it up. I told him I'd feel better if I call. Sure enough the on call nurse said just that but when she went to get a pedi to write a prescription for the certain cream, the pedi (not our normal one) decided that since its on his hand he needed to come in.

So we went in this morning and our pedi looks at it, says "that's not a third degree. He'll be fine, just put cream on it and keep it bandaged." (I never said it was third degree..)

I feel stupid that I was so insistent on calling cuz Dr google says so and then DH was right. Drove 45 mins through construction traffic and shelled out $100 for a office visit to be told what DH already knew. DH hasn't said anything about it because he's sweet and considerate like that, I just feel stupid and maybe even taken advantage of by the dr office. Reassure me you would have called too..

  • Neither you nor he has the experience to evaluate the likelihood that the healing burn will not restrict her hand movement. Taking her in was totally the right thing to do.

  • Glad your DS is going to be ok and that your DH is not giving you a hard time. I would have done the same thing you did.

This is true. Especially with how close it is to his knuckles. Thank you!

  • If DD got burned I would take her to the doctor.

My thoughts too.  I would have called right away and brought her in.

  • I don't know what a 2nd degree burn looks like, but if it was looking really blistery or the skin was peeling or bleeding, and it was a large area, I would've gone in.  I would've been worried about infection and maybe even asked for pain medication if my son seemed like he was in a lot of pain.  You don't have to tell us, but I'm curious how he got burned.  I would never flame you at all, but it's helpful to hear from other people about stuff like this because it can be a wake up call to the rest of us that maybe there's something in our house that's not as safe as we think.  For example, a few months ago, someone posted about their kid swallowing a tiny battery.  It had never occured to me to make sure I don't have any in my house.  I'm more aware of this danger now.

  • Thanks, everyone. Much better safe than sorry, no matter the cost. I don't know why I was doubting myself yesterday. Probably because I was still super upset about the incident. I took my eyes off him for literally a split second and he ran to the oven and burnt his hand *feels horrible*

  • I'm totally late to this thread, but DS got a second degree burn on his hand when he was around 18 months old. It wasn't large, but we were still referred to a plastic surgeons office, and DS underwent physical therapy (daily whirlpool baths to clean it) and follow up care from a plastic surgeon. It was blistered, but nothing beyond that. Burns on the face or hands on a child are nothing to mess around with. It's good that you had him examined.
