Sterilizing Bottles

How often do you sterilize your bottles?  Once LO has gone through about 6-7 bottles, I sterilize them by washing with hot soapy water and then boiling them.  I've noticed though that after they dry, the bottles feel rough as if theres some sort of film or powder on it.

  • I don't.  I just use hot soapy water.  I was boiling them like you, but it was too much work.  Medela makes steam sterilizer bags that I use for my pump parts and nipples once a week.

  • I've always wondered about this, but a lot of the things I've read mentioned that you really only need to sterilize them prior to first use.  I use to sterilize bottles and pacifiers regularly with our first child, but with the arrival of our second child, I just didn't have time to diligently do this.  Personally now I would just clean them thoroughly and once a month soak them in hot boiling water for my own peace of mind.
  • Our sterilizer (first years) holds 5 bottles and all parts. We wash  and then put them in the sterilizer. We do this after EVERY use. Always have since LO has been home, it's just more sanitary until she gets older.

  • What kind of bottles are you using?  I have a bunch of different brands and find that it happens to some (like the Similac bottles), but doesn't happen to others.  I think it is fine :)

  • I have twins so time is limited. I steralize every Wednesday. I just wash the bottles in hot soapy water and all the parts  (I use Dr. Brown) and then I put the nipples in my microwavable steralizer and all the other parts I put through the dishwasher too so I know that they are clean but I think just the dishwasher is fine.

  • I have NEVER sterilized bottles- i see no need to. I do it when I first buy them. Wash with hot soapy water, and run in dishwasher occasionally too. I dont think you need to. IMO, I don't understand what you are sterilizing. its their bottles, you clean them, etc.
  • I boiled the bottles, nipples, and paci's when we first brought them... But throughout the week I just use hot soapy water and rinse with hot water. About once a week I will boil everything again but not everyday.
