I think that my job is going away...

So my boss learned yesterday via an email from a former student whose uncle works for the state that the state plans on creating a department on campus that will make my department redundant. Apparently several people on campus knew about this and didn't clue me, my boss, or my boss's boss in on it. And since the univeristy will not have to pay for new department (the state is) you can guess what they'll want to do with the positions that do the same thing that they are paying for. I probably have 3-6 months before the shiit hits the fan.

FWIW, I work at a state owned university campus and that sounds like crazy shiit that goes on here too. Why do we never find out about this kind of crap through proper channels? Or ya know....*gasp*....have a say in it? Sad

Eeks, that sucks. But ditto PPs. Can you join the new department? I would think that they'd want to hire people who already know the ropes to work in the new department.

I have a very specialized degree so if I were to transfer anywhere on campus I'd end up switching careers. The new department that the state created has one part time spot going to someone whom I would never work for. Not only is he not trained in the field but he's pure evil. Plus I really hate this campus/state right now. Hell, I'm not even to fond of men right now since every single person that decided this was a good idea has a penis and every person that's going to be made redundant because of it does not.

I've got 2 job apps out in my hometown in my field, so if one of those pan out we'll land on our feet. The ILs were willing to hire movers to come pick up our stuff last night. Worst case scenario I guess will end up living in DH's old room for a while while we look for work. Ugh, it better not come to that.

That's terrible. I also work for a public university though I'm not specialized particularly. What is your area that you work in? I'll have my fingers crossed for you that one of the other jobs turns out well.

Oh yeah, and usually when something is phased out here, those people get a pretty generous (I think) time period to find something else - usually 2-3 months notice so they'd have to give you that at least. (I hope!)

I live in the middle of nowhere, so the closest place that I might find something in my field is 100 miles away in St. Louis. While I think that STL is the only highlight in this craptastic state if I'm going to move that far I may as well move the 400 miles back home where I have family and friends to watch LO while I look for work.

Fortunately none of has been officially announced so we found out in time to plan. I seriously doubt that this place would be kind enough to offer me a severance package.

Man that stinks. I hope it works out okay that you either keep your position (with a nice fat raise for good measure) or you find a great job in a locale that you actually like.
