Creeped out (NPR)

I pulled into my sub yesterday and noticed that the person behind me was following pretty closely.  I also thought it was weird that they were making every turn I made, as my house is in the middle of the sub and isn't really easy to get to.  I pulled into my driveway and they pulled into my neighbor's drive.  I thought the neighbors just got a new car that I didn't recognize.......until he backed out and parked at the end of my driveway.  I got out of my car to hurry into the house and, when I did, he rolled down his window and told me that I had a brake light out and a turn signal out.  I was really relieved that he wasn't some strange stalker :)

That is, I was relieved until tonight when I had DH go out to look at my car.  I DON'T have any lights out!  So, why did this guy follow me home?!?!  I'm not really worried per se, but I *am* wondering why he would have done that.  Thoughts?

Re: Creeped out (NPR)

  • Ugh that is really creepy! If I notice someone following me I drive past my house and turn on a street up the road until they drive past me. I am paranoid like that though.
  • not to freak you out, but that would not sit well with me.  it sounds like he wants to know where you live and wanted a look at you.  do you have an alarm on your house?  can you park inside a garage?  i would be REALLY cautious about who's around you going in and out of your house.  some people are crazy and do crazy things.

LOL no, its just something my dad ( a cop) drilled in my head when I started driving. I have only done it a couple times in the last 6+ years.
  • If you think someone is following you NEVER go home.  If it ever happens again drive to another street and go in a big circle to wind up back on the road you started on to know if they followed you, then call 911 and go to the police station, don't let them know where you live.

  • I would totally report it to the police -- even if you can't remember many details about the car/plate/etc, at least having it on record would help if he randomly shows up again.  That would freak me out a ridiculous amount.  I hope nothing scary happens!

  • Ditto pps that you never go home.  You can make a series of right turns (until you've gone in a complete circle) then call the police, or, what I've done before, is just drive to the closest police station.

And, I also would call the police now and report it with all the details you can about the car and the guy.  It may help them solve other crimes or be the first attempt by some wacko.

I have only done it a few times but I have had people drive off a major road and be behind me for the next 15 minutes, when you turn into my neighborhood there is no way I am not freaking out even though it is likely coincidence.

I've done it before, too.  Better be safe than sorry.

  • Ohhh, creepy. We've had one guy follow us all the way from Las Vegas to Disneyland. We would go on overnight trips to Vegas after Disney closed at midnight and then come home in time for the openers to be there in the morning. We pulled into the employee entrance and pulled right up to the security station. The security guard scared the guy away. He was seriously following us for almost 4 hours! There are some creepy people out there.

  • I was taught to never, ever go home. Drive to a well lit area and call the cops.

  • This type of scenario should be taught in drivers Ed classes at school or in the test for getting a learners.  Young drivers really should be taught what to do (and not to do such as speed, go home, pull over on the side of the road, drive aggressively etc) if they are being followed.

I was followed for 40mins when I was a sr in hs. My 2 friends were freaking out. It was before the age of cell phones so I couldn't call the police. I drove to a gas station that was busy and told my friends to get ready to run inside screaming.   We had already made several turns drove down a road only ppl who live on use and then back to the main highway. I knew he was following.  I had slowed down to 10 below the limit and he wouldn't pass. Sped up to 10 over an he was still on my bumper.

We got out and ran in screaming like fools. Stupid guy pulled in as well.  We were so freaked out.  I told the cashier we were being followed and she called the police. Guy still sat in his car I guess waiting for us to pull out. He didn't see us run in screaming.  Police showed up and took my statement and he was questioned. I ddont know if e was charged with anyhing. After the police got my statement we left.

I would call the police and report it.

  • Never ever pull into your driveway!  Call the police now to report it and keep those doors locked.  Super scary.  Be safe.
