soo, gender appt. is when? confused again!

So every post I've seen about gender and every website I've been on has said 18-20 weeks is the typical time you'll find out the gender of the little one..

I just read a post that said this lady will found hers out between 15 and 16 weeks? This excites me cause my next appt. will be around this time. How accurate do you think this will be? This one is my first and I'm a little anxious!

Adding to that, has anyone reading this ever done a reveal? I've NEVER thought about it but I saw a post last night about a cake, with the inside (cake part) being dyed with blue food coloring. Awesome idea but I don't think I'd have the patience to make a cake and schedule a time for everyone to come together LOL cute idea though!

Thanks ladies!

  • I honestly would take it with a grain of salt unless you 20 weeks. They told me at 16 weeks it as a girl and at 20 weeks a boy. It is FAR less reliable before 20 weeks. I had a boy, not a girl lol

haha! my cousin told me the same thing. If they tell you at 15ish weeks, don't run out and buy anything. Wait til 18-22 weeks when they know for sure. I guess you never really know for sure until the bean comes out at 9 months :)

  • For gender reveal... I'm thinking about sending the new grandparents a pair of pink or blue tiny little socks in the mail. It'll be their first grandbaby, and I'm not one to go overboard, but I thought something little would be fun and cute.

As for gender determination, my OB (canadian) says 18-20 weeks.  I'll aim for 20 to improve accuracy, even though It'l be hard to wait knowing that they'd tell me!! :)

  • The tech should be able to tell you the sex of your baby at your anatomy scan which is is usually done around 18-20 weeks.  Some people have elective ultrasounds prior to that to find out the sex.

I don't get the whole "reveal" thing.  To me it seems a little self-important and attention whorish.  But that's just me, apparently its trendy now.

  • 20 weeks for a normal ultrasound

I'm thinking about going with the 3 or 4d ultrasound to find out early at 16 weeks.

  • I have an appt at 16 weeks too, to listen to the heart beat and that's about it. Just because you have an appt doesn't mean you will automatically have an u/s. My gender u/s will be scheduled when I'm 20 weeks.

  • I have my official gender appointment at 20 weeks, but I?m going to have an elective ultrasound at 16 weeks in case DH will not be able to attend the 20 week appt (which is very likely with his job). I don?t plan to make any purchases until after the 20 w ultrasound. As far as gender reveal parties go, I think they are fine as long as they are very small and family (or super close friends) only.
  • Just an FYI and hopefully this will help clarify the confusion:   the ultrasound done at 18-20 weeks is an anatomy scan not a gender scan.  Your babies' organs, limbs and other body parts are measured to make sure that its healthy and that there are no other complications.  The determination of the sex (should you so chose) is just an added bonus - not the reason it is done.

    Also sex =/= gender.

  • My OB does an u/s at every appointment so that's why I'll possibly find out at 16 weeks. I won't really start shopping until I have my 20 week u/s to confirm.

Edit: I think reveal parties are dumb.

All of this.  I will be happy to see a healthy baby and could care less if it is a boy or girl.

  • I scheduled my "20 week" appt to find out the gender. The appt just so happens to fall around 22 weeks though :-/ o supposed at 20, unless you get lucky. I have an appt at 17 weeks, it would be nice if they would just tell me then.

    Exactly. Yes

We found out at 19 weeks for sure. The tech took a guess at 12 weeks and she was right.

As far as the party...that kinda steps on the toes of a having a baby shower doesnt it?

Not having the party, just mentioned that it was a cute idea, speaking of the pic/cake that I found. I'm already having 2 seperate baby showers, plus, I couldn't keep it from everybody, everybody is already too anxious to find out. And about the "gender/anatomy" scan, my dr. refers to it as the gender appointment, as did I. Nothing against the terminology and I also believe EVERY woman on this board wants a healthy baby, boy or girl, including myself. Regardless of the "anatomy or gender" I'll be thrilled.

EDIT: Also, a reveal party (i've read) doesn't have to require gifts. Just a cute way to get close family and maybe friends together, the ones that are really excited about the pregnancy, which is really our whole family. It's not really a baby shower.. Just sayin.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

I'm going to give this one last shot because I don't think you understand what I am saying.  The terms anatomy and gender are not interchangeable.  The U/S done at 20 weeks is called an anatomy scan because they are checking the babies' entire anatomy.  Skull, spine, brain, stomach, arms, legs, hands, feet, kidney, etc.  Not just what is in between the babies' legs.  The purpose of that ultrasound is not to determine what sex your baby will be, that is just an added bonus.  Furthermore, I'm totally side-eying your doctor for referring to it as the gender scan for two reasons.  The first being what I just explained to you and the second is that the sex of the baby does not necessarily equal the gender of the baby.

  • The normal anatomy scan (the point of the u/s is NOT to determine the sex, not gender, of the baby) needs to be b/w 18-20 weeks.

I was measuring 6 weeks ahead with both babies and just so happened to have my a/s at 17w4d with both and they were able to clearly measure everything.  I also found out the sex at that point and both were 100% correct.

And gender reveal parties are lame.
