I'm the assistant to a prominent person within our organization. Lately, it seems as though we've had quite a few firings. I would argue that they were all justified but it tends to make one a little nervous, especially leading up to 3.5 months of maternity leave.
I'm just going to keep my head down and do the best I can to prepare my replacement for my absence. I keep reminding myself that once my little boy is here, I'll hardly think of this place until it's time to start dreading my return. ![]()
Anyone else work in a position where they usually know all of the dirt before it goes down? It kinda makes me feel icky sometimes. I always tell my husband that I don't have the stomach for this job.
Re: Boss just fired someone...
No, I work in a large office building. Most conversations are done silently through emails and meetings behind closed doors. You rarely hear any water cooler talk or of people griping about their day.
My husband works in a small office of women who whine and bltch over everything. They are all in each others business and all know who's about to be fired..the victim is usually the last to know.
My situtation is a little different. I am the boss and have had to fire 2 people in the past month. I work for a company that doesn't fire many people, so obviously it has come as shock to many of my employees. With the exception of my management team, I am unable to discuss why the employees got fired, due to privacy reasons. I try to explain to employees as they ask me, that I am unable to discuss details with them because it is between the employee and me (and remind them that they wouldn't want me to share their business, if the situtation was reversed)...however, I do try to reassure them to please trust that no decisions are made without being fair to everyone involved. I remind them of our "open door policy" as well as the other avenues that they can take if they feel that they want to speak to someone other than me. I obviously didn't want to have to fire 2 people within one month, but unfortunately things happened that had to be dealt with. I don't regret my decision, however I do understand how it may look to the other employees. I try to spend additional time recognizing their accomplishments and telling them how much they are appreciated. Hang in there and know that just because you are seeing it happen, doesn't mean it will happen to you. Sometimes, we can't help the timing, but are still trying to do what we know is best. GL!
