Constipation. Help!(tmi)

I know this has been discussed but it was never a problem for us because G was still getting enough breast milk.  But, he's breaking my heart today.  He's crying and crouching and straining to poop.  It's not hard-more like little pats but he's clearly in pain.  I don't know what to do.  Any suggestions?

Re: Constipation. Help!(tmi)

  • :(  Poor little guy!  I wonder if maybe a bath would help relax him some.  When Jack starts to have trouble I give him prunes and it helps fairly quickly.  I hope he gets relief soon!
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.

  • Pear juice works for us. I know some people do not like juice but within an hour she goes. It used to be 2oz mixed with water. It now take 4oz straight.

  • Prune juice? and stay away from cheese? That's about all I have... J hasn't been through this because he's still getting plenty of BM

ETA: BM is breastmilk not bowel movement btw lol

  • I recommend juice as well.  My oldest daughter dealt with constipation for a few months - it was really, really bad.  Poor little G - hope he gets to feeling better.

  • Thanks!  I'll try juice.

  • Aww, poor G!  Hope his poops get better soon.  I've tried less dairy and a bit of pureed prunes and that seemed to help.  GL!
  • Prune juice or prune purees help DS. I also second the bath idea.

  • If he's not a fan of the juice...try rice milk for a few days w/ 2 tbsp of prune juice in it.  It's such a small amount that they won't notice there's juice in it.  C LOVES her rice milk...she drinks it right up and asks for more!  It's helped us so far!  We've also cut out most dairy like cheese & yogurt for now.  She had coconut yogurt this morning and absolutely loved it!  Yay!  And she had rice cheese in a "grilled cheese" sandwich and ate it all!  Thank god for dairy alternatives!

  • Also be sure he gets water too - so much calcium can constipate anybody! If he eats yogurt and cheese, he doesn't need a ton of milk so offer water instead sometimes and that helps keep things moving. :) GL

This is a good idea.  I wonder if almond milk would do it?  That's what I drink so I have it on hand.

  • Another vote for juice. My pedi said any sorbitol containing juice (apple, prune, pear) will help. It has with my LO. I chose apple because out of the choices I found it had the least amount of sugar.

She also gave me a list of high fiber toddler snacks. It was the usual stuff like bran flakes, shredded mini wheats if I can find it I will PM you.

  • Hold him in a knees-to-chest position. I do this with DS while the TV is on just so he is distracted. Put gentle pressure on the backs of his upper legs. He will strain in resistance and it will help the BM out.

Like illustrated in this website (mom crouched with baby in pink).

  • Full on prune juice helps Alexander, but...

Ok, here is some more TMI....

Sometimes I have to help him get the poop out. When he's straining, I quickly lay him on his back and scrunch up his legs. That usually makes the poop come to the...uh...threshold?  Then I grab it (with a wipe) and pull it out for him. We have done this more times than I can count.Tongue Tied

I was totally contemplating doing this.  Crazy...just crazy what we will do as moms.

  • Mandarins.  I buy the Dole brand in the plastic jar in 100% juice.  It works wonders for my LO.
