Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Ok, we're doing it. The dreaded potty training. Tips please!

For the past couple weeks DD has been saying "sssss" and running to the bathroom whenever she pees. Lately she's also been refusing to wear diapers, so we are starting to potty train today, naked from the waist down. So far we're 0 for 3.. accidents on the floor, then she says "sss" and sits on her potty. I really feel like she's ready, but I'm just curious how long I should assume the accidents will last until she really starts getting it. A couple days? A couple weeks?

  • Throw out every last diaper so you can't turn back. Purchase at least 20 pairs of underwear and keep DD in undies and a top, no pants all day. I did the 3 day potty training and it worked amazing! He was potty trained after a week but had accidents for about a month. Poop took about 2 months so I had lots of dirty undies to change. After two months had pasted he was great! Constant praise and rewards. Good Luck!

  • Best of luck!! I have no tips for you personally.

Someone told me that when I want to do it, don't use diapers just underware because they hate feeling wet so this helps the process. I have zero clue as to how true it is... but that's the only 2cents I can offer!

  • Thanks! I don't want to turn back, although we do plan on using diapers at night time and naps. Would that be really bad?

We're planning on doing what I know of the "three day potty training" method, but I'm super scared to go anywhere in the next week Tongue Tied

  • I put Gavin in undies, and explained he needed to tell me when he had to go potty.  He peed in the undies 3 times, and each time I made him wait a few minutes before I changed him.  He got the point after that and did great.

We still do pull ups for naps and nighttime.  Kids are not always capable of waking up in time until they are a little older.  This should not de-rail you.  Just go back to undies when she wakes up.

    Good luck!

  • We are in the process of PTing right now.  It has been nearly a week now and DD is doing great!  We left her naked for the first 2 days and she only had one accident.  She realized and stopped mid flow and then I ran her to her potty.  She has never really told us that she has to go.  She just goes and then tells us so that we can go flush it together.  We let her do the actual flushing and make it "fun" for her.  She has actually pooped, completely on her own, 3 times now.  For poop she gets a sticker.

On day 3 we tried panties.  She just pees in them and I was worried about her progress regressing so we switched back to naked.  She has not had any accidents since.  We put her in panties again about 30 minutes ago so we shall see.  I have been really watching her signs to know when she has to go.  Once she stands on her tippy toes and then crosses her legs I remind, "Remember to tell Mommy/Daddy when you need to go to the potty."

Someone told me once that it helped them to remind LO to tell them instead of asking if they have to go.  That subtle difference supposedly makes a big difference once they are back in clothes.  Good luck!

ETA: Oh yeah, the thing that helped us the most.....DD was acting as if she was afraid of the potty when she was naked.  I put her baby sister on her potty,  I had the little vag squirt bottle that they give you at the hospital hidden behind her back and made it look like DD2 was peeing on DD1's potty.  I told her that baby sister could do it so, she could too.  It worked and she sat there for the next 15 min trying to go.  Unfortunately, her bladder was empty but that is what really kick started her actual going.  You could use her stuffed animal/doll as an example if she gets to that stage.

  • We also did 3 day PT method and it worked wonderfully.  We kept him in pull ups during nap and bedtime.  He's finally able to wake up dry after 12 hours of sleep.  Pedi told us some kids don't have the bladder control to hold in until closer to school age.

If you want, I can email you 3 day PT method.  Just pm me your email.

  • How old were your kids when you started PTing?  DD is almost 19 months and I was planning to wait till she was closer to two years (??).  Do you start at a certain age or once they start showing signs?
