Re: variations of john

  • Well, the Irish version of John is Sean, so that's an option.

For girls, my name is Shauna, which obviously is the female version of Sean. I've also met a Johnna.

  • I actually prefer the name John to it's variants. Johnny when he's younger and then just John. EDIT I really love Johnny! I just know one who decided at a certain age he was too old for it.

I still call my husband Johnny :-)

My husband is Johnny also :) Our son is John Jr - but goes by Jack.

  • I would go with an ethnic variation if it is an ethnicity that is part of your background.

As far as Anglo variations, my favorites for girls are Joanna and Jane, and Jack for a boy.

And I think John itself is nice, too.  And it is actually fairly uncommon among new babies.

  • Jonathan isn't a variation of John per se, but I do think it is a great, similar sounding name, and with the same nicknames.

I have honestly never known a Jonathan who wasn't a great guy :)

  • Hanz is the German version of John.

  • Zane means "Little John"

  • John is a family name for me (grandfather, father, brother's middle name). I'm very much considering Ian for a boy (I'm also about 30% Scottish and I like that it's the Scottish version).
