Is Arby's roast beef considered "lunchmeat"??

I know there is alot of back and forth about lunchmeat, whether you can or cannot eat it. I was just wondering if Arby's roast beef would be considered "bad". I have been trying to avoid any type of lunchmeat, but today I had a roast beef sandwich from there and didn't even realize it could be bad for baby until I was almost done. I'm just overly worried now. Please help me with your opinions, and or thoughts.

 Thank you so so much!!

  • Since it is lunch meat - I would say yes....
  • It cooked/hot, right? If so, it should be fine.

  • If you would like to eat lunchmeat, it should be safe if it's heated in the oven. I know there meat is hot, maybe ask them at what temp they heat it and for how long?  I'm guessing it's fine.

  • Yep, it's bad. It's just as over-processed, if not more so, than deli lunch meat, and it's loaded with chemicals to make it look/smell/taste good and give it a longer shelf life. Definitely no better for you than a hotdog.

Fast food, as a general rule, is terrible for you. However, having said that, if you're puking everything up and an Arby's roast beef sandwich is all you can keep down, I say eat it and enjoy every bite.

  • Regardless of whether or not this qualifies as lunch meat, please remember that lunch meat isn't dangerous just because it's lunch meat.  If it's not properly handled it can make you sick but worrying you've done harm is making the assumption there was something wrong with the thing you ate, which is very very unlikely.

  • Dear God.  It's heated.  And the chances of there being anything wrong with it even if you went into the kitchen and ate it raw?  Like .00003%.  Relax, or you're going to have a very long 9 months.

  • I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the risk with lunchmeat is more to you, and the possibility of foodborne illness.  It is easier to get a foodborne illness when pregnant, and if you do get an illness there is greater risk because you are pregnant, but I personally feel that unless you eat these no no items daily, you will be fine to enjoy them occasionally.

LOL! My last pregnancy Subway was my biggest craving - gasp! I ate it for lunch 3x/week cold - gasp! My son couldn't be physically and developmentally healthier - he is almost 3 and has never had an earache and about 3 colds his life thus far.  Eat it.

Wow. Okay, all I was saying is that it's crappy food, like pretty much all fast food is. How is that being a Debbie Downer?

  • I wouldnt eat it unless heated. I wouldnt eat it nor would I tell someone to eat non heated lunch meat its on the no no list for a reason. Just because you decided to chance it and eat it doesnt mean you should tell others its ok. IMO

Right. Except some of us? We see docs who aren't fear mongering food nazis, so there is no "no no list". Mine actually laughed during my first pregnancy when I asked the all important lunch meat question. Do eat well as often as you can. Don't spaz about lunch meat.

The OP is specifically asking about an Arby's roast beef sandwich, which *is* heated.

  • I say EAT that sandwich! Don't forget to order melted cheese on it and a side of curly fries! Mmmmmmmm....... Now I'm craving Arby's!
  • Eat it! Don't forget the curly fries! Mmmmmm.....
  • I guess at this rate you shouldn't eat soft ice cream either. All I was able to keep down (for whatever reason) was Subway for a little while. My OB thought I was stupid for even worrying. Everyone is different... everyone sees risks differently. Food can be handled badly regardless of what it is. If you take the risk of eating out (in general) then it's just as much as a risk as eating lunch meat... which, by all statistics I've seen... is a very small risk. You have a bigger risk getting into a car. So, guess check that off the no-no list too.

I hope you're also avoiding all those fresh fruits which have caused most of the listeria outbreaks the past few years. Hmm

  • Oh the lunch meat debate. I eat lunch meat, heated or not. Arby's sounds delicious to me right now, even though it's probably only about 3% meat. And regardless of your lunch meat decision, it is heated... so it should be "ok" by most doctors.
  • I hate it when people start these food posts!!  I always crave it by the time I finish reading the thread.  I guess I'll just have to go to Arby's for lunch today...

Me too! I'm seriously considering having my husband stop on his way home from work to get me a delicious *heated* french dip sandwich.
