Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Bedtimes?

My LO is 4 weeks and we don't have a bedtime for her. She stays with us downstairs, usually sleeping in one of our arms, until we head up to bed which is usually around 10. When I said this to my mom, she said that we should be putting her down to sleep much sooner.

Right now the baby sleeps in a cradle next to our bed. Once we transfer her to the crib in her room we certainly plan to have a set bedtime and routine, but my mom now has me thinking that we need to start doing that now. What does everyone else do? I don't think I'm ready to have her sleeping in another room unsupervised. I feel like she's still too little. On the other hand, I don't want her to develop bad sleep habits.

Thoughts?

Re: Bedtimes?

  • We do the same thing.  Unless she is out for the night i keep her in the living room with us or in her boppy.  I usually feed her once more before i myself go to bed between 11 and midnight.    I always swore after the first month or two i'd have my baby in their crib in their room.. fail lol. she sleeps beside our bed in the top part of her pack n play.  but her room is also across our apartment right by the front door lol.  I say keep her in your room as long as you both feel needed.   i told my husband to tell me THE DAY he starts feeling like she should be moved right outside of our room or into hers so that by the time i get myself mentally prepared he wont' be super annoyed with me.  LO's NICU dr actually told us that leaving them in your room for the first year is very common( and normal) and more people do it than they tell you lol.

  • she doesn't have to be "unsupervised" - do you have a monitor?  you could put her in the cradle once she's asleep and just turn the monitor on

  • 4 weeks old is still too young to need a routine/schedule. You are fine to keep her with you for a while longer. You will need to start putting her down earlier eventually, but no need to now. They don't start understanding routines and forming habits until 3-4 months.
  • I did the same thing. I only started an actual night time routine around 2 months, shes 3 months now and doesnt have an exact bed time. She does usually go down around 8 or 9 though. I think shes starting to understand the bottle after her bath is her last before bed. Shes been basically STTN and going right down after her bath and bottle. She is still in her PnP in our room. I dont know yet when I want to put her in her own room. Probably when I am more comfortable letting her cry a little and leave her be. I dont think they can form bad sleep habbits that early. I think what your doing is perfectly fine
