I am completely confused. After trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant for a year, I went for cycle day 3 b/w. The nurse called and said I needed to see an endocrinologist b/c I have hypothyroidism. My tsh was 10.6 and prolactin was 28.
2 weeks later, I saw an endocrinologist. She went ahead and gave me some synthroid based on the recent results but drew more blood at the visit. Yesterday she called to say my tsh was 3.87 and prolactin was normal. What the heck? How can it change so much? She still wants me on synthroid, but 1/2 the dose. She wants my tsh under 2 and doesn't want me ttc until it is.
Has anyone had something like this or any clue how it could be so different? All the endo said was she sees crazy things in medicine sometimes (very helpful). Given the first tsh level, I was really hopeful fixing my thyroid would do the trick, but I'm worried that maybe it's not the only problem. I ovulate regularly and have regular cycles and hubb'ys SA was great. I'm waiting on the day 21 progesterone results.
Thanks!
Re: Varying TSH (hypothyroidism)
She originally gave me 75 mg but now says take half with the lower tsh result.
Hi! I actually hadn't starting taking the meds yet when they drew my blood the second time so there was no medicine in my system between the 10.6 and 3.87...that's why I'm so confused! They did test a lot of other thyroid related stuff so I'll request she send me a copy of the results. I'm assuming they are normal. She just said I have mild hypo and to half her original dosage. 37.5 mcg seems low and I'm just wondering if we can just disregard the tsh level of 10.6. I have a lot of questions to ask her when I call on Monday!
Thanks for the response!
My TSH was around 5 and they started me on 25mcg, then upped it to 50mcg after blood work a month or two later. Then, it got upped again to 75mcg . . . it's all dependent on the individual. I have a friend that has no thyroid and she's only on 137mcg . . .
Just be prepared that the medicine is a long-term medicine and that it will more than likely take months to regulate it - I think it took 5 or 6 months for me to be on the right dose.
