a WWYD about PB

I want to give DS PB now. MH wants to wait till he's 2. There is no history of allergies in either of our families.

I bought a jar of all natural PB & hid it behind some other stuff so MH doesn't see it.

I am home w/ DS during the day while MH is at work.

Would you give it to DS w/o telling YH?

Re: a WWYD about PB

  • H and MIL give LO stuff all the time when I'm not around - it seriously pisses me off b/c I'm the one that gets up with him at night, and will remember what he's had - in case there is a reaction.

I would just make sure you have some benadryl to be safe ...Pedi cleared LO for peanut butter but not peanuts.

Why does he want to wait?

I would give LO a little bit if I wanted to (see above reason)

Because he is in the old school of thought that waiting decreases chances of there being an allergic reaction.

Good idea about having Benadryl on hand!

  • I would rather get DH on board with the idea before just doing it to prevent a fight. It's his kid too and he's got a say. Why does he want to wait until two? What does the pedi have to say?

If your pedi has cleared him, I'd go ahead and give him a little.  Though OSC has a point, his son too ...OSC, you need to talk to my H and MIL, cause they don't seem to give a flying flip about my wishes when it comes to - well anything about the boys

Yeah, I'd have a hard time respecting the wishes of someone who didn't return the favor, but I try to avoid sinking to their level, ya know?

But yeah, if the pedi cleared him, maybe try explaining the new research about allergies and introducing items earlier than before.

  • This is so funny.  I was thinking about this today and was going to ask when I got home.  I had been avoiding it with LO.  I did read that they are saying anywhere from 1-2, but I was still hesitant.  However, DH gave LO a bite of a chocolate no-bake cookie, not realizing that there is peanut butter in them.  Then, this morning, my babysitter told me that her teenage son had given LO a bite of something PB the other afternoon when he was with LO for a few minutes while she ran down to pick up her kiddo from school.  I don't think he has had very much, but I haven't seen any reaction.

I know it can be a choking hazard if they ate like a big glob of it or something.  I don't really understand why the age is 1-2.  Which is it?  1 or 2?

  • I was seriously debating giving LO peanut butter in the dr. office waiting room before our appointment. How would DH feel about that? That way if LO has an immediate reaction, you'll be in the best place.

This. If I knew DH was set against doing it, I would not do it behind his back.

  • I wouldn't go behind his back but did your Pedi okay it or did he/she also say to wait until 2? If your doctor said okay then I think your H should let him try it. I agree, maybe share with him the research that says delaying foods may increase allergy risks.

  • Thanks for all your input! I guess I'll have to talk to him again. I don't remember what our pedi said about PB, or if she even mentioned it at all.

  • My pedi told me honey, pb, and shellfish were fine anytime now.  We haven't tried honey yet or shellfish.  But he loves his pb and jelly sandwiches.  The first time we gave it I gave it as an early afternoon snack (he had just napped) so that I could watch for any reactions and he had none then or the following time.  But....dh and I were in agreement when to give him certain foods so I would make sure your dh is agreeable to it too.

  • I wouldn't do it behind you H's back, but I do think he is being silly. New research shows that giving PB earlier (after the age of 1) actually decreases the risk of developing an allergy. I'd do some hunting and confront him with the facts, if I were you. If that still doesn't work, make sure to bring it up with your pedi at the next appointment.
