Trying different formula?

Has anyone tried a different type of formula without running it by the pedi?  We took our 6 week old son to the doctor on Monday because he was grunting ALOT and having somewhat difficult feelings. The pedi said the grunting is normal as he is trying to push the gas out. Since then though he has trouble eating after about 2 ounces when he usually eats 3-4. He's on similac advance now - has been since day one when we had to supplement due to being born 4 weeks early. Thinking about trying similac for gas/fussiness. What are your thoughts?

Re: Trying different formula?

  • I switched my daughter's formula without talking to the pedi. I know my daughter better than he does. She was super gassy when she was on Enfamil newborn.  I switched her to Enfamil gentlease and she was a happy baby within 24 hours.

  • Heck yes I changed formulas without asking the doc! I think my doc's office has a deal with similac because that's all they recommend. I changed DD to gerber good start around 2-3 weeks (supplementing at the time). Her gas problems went away within 3 days. But sometimes those difficult feedings just happen. They all have gas and days where it hurts their tummies. My LO was almost inconsolable in the evenings until we switched.

  • Our baby did horribly on fussiness and gas similac... we switched to gerber gentle and he has been great ever since !
  • Our son is almost 3 weeks old and we got a ton of free formula samples from different manufacturers. I've tried Enfamil Infant formula and Similac Advance on him and he seems to respond better to the first one. We took him to his 2-week appointment and his pediatrician said to just stick with the formula he responds better to so we're sticking with the Enfamil.
