Benadryl for day/night mix up? XP from Dec 2011 Moms

Has anyone else been told this? A friend of mine said that her midwife told her about a few patients who gave their babies the smallest dose of benadryl at night so they would sleep and wake up well rested to start teaching them their days and nights. She asked her pedi about it, and her pedi said she had heard of that too. She didn't condone it per se, but said she off the record that might be a good trick.

Has anyone else heard of such a thing? I thought it was interesting.

  • I have heard of this for going on airplanes but it just seems really wrong to me. Infants should only have meds when needed. The day/night confusion is just something babies do- hang in there and it will straighten out.

Oh no, I'm not doing it. A friend was telling me about it earlier, and she is planning on doing it with her LO. I had never heard of doing such a thing, so I just wanted to see what others thought about it.

  • Never heard that but I find it very selfish to drug your baby so they'll sleep when you want them to.

I agree, out of all the reasons to medicate an infant this is completely unnecessary.

  • While drugging your child to sleep is not a good idea, it is still a good idea to have a bottle of liquid Benadryl in your house at all times in case your child was to have an allergic reaction. The best thing is that the bottle expires and you have to buy a new one. But if a reaction occurred you really don't want to have to try a 24 hour place that sells Benadryl at 1 am.

  • My DD has severe allergies and was on Benadryl for a while until they switched her to something else but LO's are extremely lethargic after a dose of Benadryl. Once the initial sleep kicks they breathe very slow and shallow. It's really scary, then wake up almost hung over. Kind of like when we take NyQuil, yeah you slept but feel tired all day. My DD was so behind with her daily progress because all she did was sleep. Tell your friend to deal with the day/night thing it corrects it's self by week 5.
