Babies: 0 - 3 Months

LO Spitting Up Often

I know all babies spit up but the last two days my 4 week old has spit up 3 or 4 times after feeding (I'm breastfeeding ). He eats every 2-3 hours during the day and every 2-4 hours at night. Anyone else have an issue like this?? Or should I call his pedi? Thanks!!

Re: LO Spitting Up Often

  • DD spits up all the time I brought it up to pedi and he said as long as she is happy when she's spitting up and not crying than she is probably just eating too much. I am going to bring it up again though because it seems excessive to me.

"A few statistics (for all babies, not just breastfed babies):

    • Spitting up usually occurs right after baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.
    • Half of all 0-3 month old babies spit up at least once per day.
    • Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months.
    • Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months.
    • Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months.

If your baby is a ?Happy Spitter? --gaining weight well, spitting up without discomfort and content most of the time -- spitting up is a laundry & social problem rather than a medical issue."

  • My LO is 2 weeks old, and today she spit up 2 to 3 times after every feeding and projectile vomited once. I called the pedi and they want to see her tomorrow.  She's not fussy or anything and I burp her after every feeding. I don't know if I ate something that isn't agreeing with her or what...

I felt better after calling the doctor, and maybe you will too. I might be nothing, but at least DD will be looked at just to make sure. GL!

  • My DS just started doing this the last week or so, so I brought it up to the Pedi at his 2 month appt yesterday.  She said he is just eating a bit too much since he's not appearing uncomfortable while spitting up.  She then asked me if while feeding (BF) if he has a tendency to pull off after feeding for a bit and then relatch, and if he does this, does he do it a few times before he's finished feeding.  This is exactly what he does so she suggested that after he pulls off the first time (so long as he's feed for a decent amount of time) to give him a pacifer and not have him latch back on, since that last little bit is what he's probably spitting up.  Now my DS is not having any issues with gaining weight or anything (he's in the 90th percentile) which is why she said that it would be ok to do this.  Might be something to try so long as your LO is gaining weight ok and you've established a good supply (if BF).

  • I bottle-feed EBM and supplement with formula, and my LO has bad spit-up days too. Today I swear he's spit up a full ounce after every feeding. It's gross. It doesn't seem to bother him, though, so I assume it's just a combination of his greedy eating and the air he gets from the bottle and from bubbles in the formula.
