i need an excuse for why i can't go ice skating!

I'm supposed to go ice skating with my SIL and her kids on Feb 1st.  This has been planned for a while, and I'm the one that initiated it.  Now I realize that ice skating isn't a great idea.  We're not telling people until after the US on Feb 16th.

Help!

  • Maybe a little white lie, like you twisted your ankle walking the dog on maybe to 29th or 30th. That way you can still give them a few days notice.

  • I'm trying to understand why you can't ice skate-are you afraid of falling?  I think it probably depends on your skill.  If you think you need to cancel, can you tell her that something came up OR fake an injury so that you are canceling far enough in advance to be fair to her and her kids?

  • I was going to say a bad or twisted knee...
  • I'd probably just say something came up and ask to reschedule for a week after when you plan to announce it.

  • 1) say that you're not feeling well and ditch it all together

    2) say that you hurt your ankle, but you'd love to see THEM skate

    3) put on the skates, but hang out by the wall (I'd do this even if I wasn't pg because I suck at skating)

    4) Tell your SIL in private the truth

    5) call up your SIL now and say "I know we were going to go skating, but here's another idea, we could go xxxxxx instead. I just heard from a co-worker/friend that it is beyond awesome, and I think the kids would like it better."

Just go ice skating? This doesn't make sense to me.

I think she's probably worried about falling/getting hurt which is understandable.

  • Even if you did fall while ice skating, I don't think it'd cause any problems at this point. It's not like you have a bump to fall on. However, that being said, there are all sorts of excuses you can come up with to explain why you can't ice skate.

Eh, i think it's overkill. Whatevs.

LOL, that may be, but I gotta say I fall on the ice EVERY year and always get hurt (yes, I'm a clutz. haha) so I've been worried also, even though I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything. Getting hurt is never fun, especially when you have a babe in ya to worry about.

  • I'd venture to say you're not going to fall hard enough to do any damage.  The baby is in a very nice, shock absorbent sack.     In fact...it makes me want to go ice skating real bad.   I know it sounds gross, but I love to get the hot chocolate at the skating rink and pour a package of M&Ms and a few packets of sugar in it.  It's delish.  I wonder how far over the 200mg caffeine limit that would put me.  lol...Stick out tongue

If that's the case I guess I'd say I get hurt every year and don't feel up to dealing with it this year. OP you're over thinking this one.

  • I personally wouldn't go - I'm too nervous. I might tell her in private (it's only a few days before - plus if she has kids you guys will have tons to talk about that day!) Ant then that way you can go and hang out but just not skate. She can tell the kids that you hurt your knee or something.
  • I might be over-thinking this, but I'd rather play it safe.  I may just go and stay near the edge the entire time.  That would work, I guess.  I had knee surgery last year so maybe I could blame it on that....Or I could just tell her.

    Thanks for the ideas everyone!
