My dad is taking early retirement

I am in shock. He's works for Jeep and since the auto industry is in the crapper he decided to take the early retirement package. He's been offered it before, but he's afraid that he won't be offered it again.

On top it off, his friend already offered him a part-time job at the local homeless shelter where he can use his degreeand help others. My parents are so excited about it.

I'm glad that everything worked out for him.

Very cool.  It is nice that he can move to another career that is more rewarding.  My Pop retired at 46.  I would ask him about health insurance and make sure he has a plan.  Jeep may provide it for him, but they often don't.  My parents just started Medicare this year (65), but before that the only insurance they could get was a state mandated plan that companies have to offer if they sell insurance in the state that cost $30,000 a year and a $10,000 deductable.  It is a big nut if you can't get regular employment.  I know several people who work at Publix or Kroger just to cover insurance.

he will be able to have insurance through Jeep and they will pay him a lump sum out in addition to the pension that he can invest. He was really blessed to get this offered to him.

DH works for Chrysler on the finance side and it sounds like the packages coming out on motors are really good. I am glad he is able to take it and enjoy himself. The lump sum amount is really good.
