TTC after 35

A REALLY stupid temping question

So, I haven't temped before, but I do have a FF account.  I just enter my OPK info from my CBEFM in it, and other random info.  Well, I was thinking of temping instead (esp. since I lent the CBEFM to a friend.)

Should I just start temping now?  I know it will be fairly meaningless, but maybe it would be good to get my temping kinks out now?  Thanks for your input, as I have absolutely zero experience with temping.

Re: A REALLY stupid temping question

  • I say start as soon as you can.  It took me a while to get in the habit of taking my temperature before getting out of bed.  Even if the temps are not good for this cycle, it's good to just get in the habit.

  • Yes, start temping now, even if you're in the middle or near the end of the cycle.  At least you'll get in the habit of temping at the same time each morning, and become more familiar with the various data fields (don't let all the different fields intimidate you, if you just want to start with measuring temps, that is fine).  I also have the mobile app on my phone so that makes it easier to input data rather than waiting till I'm on a computer.

  • There's no harm in temping right now, it will just give you a little extra time to develop the habit.

I wanted to add this because you mentioned that you want to temp instead of using the CBEFM...the info you get from temping is a little different from what you get from your CBEFM.

The CBEFM predicts your fertile days before you ovulate and temping helps pinpoint/confirm the day of ovulation 3 days after you ovulate.I find that temping and the OPKs work well together, but couldn't replace one another.

Very good point.  I use OPK's in addition to FF (to predict and then confirm O).

  • Thanks!  Many good points ladies.  Smile
  • It's good to start temping around CD5 so you have the rest of the cycle to see the temperature shift after ovulation. I usually take a break during my period and sometimes a few days after O because I hate temping and my 2 yr old jumps in our bed at 6am and doesn't really let me temp Surprise
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • Absolutely you should start temping. Like others have said, for developing the habit, but also because even if you are post-O, you'll get an idea about your temp range for your luteal phase. You'll know better what to look for next cycle.

I'm not sure what else you are doing, but looking for the change in CM that comes before ovulation is also very useful for timing procreative (as opposed to recreational) sex.

    Good luck!
