According to Name Berry, it is a form of Coral/Coralie. Coralie is actually pretty cute. I agree with Coraline getting mixed up with Caroline. I also just like Cora on its own.
Made up or not, I really like them. I named my daughter Cora, but I think Coraline is just as beautiful.
I also think a lot of names get easily confused, especially when glancing at them. It is no different than someone glancing at Cora's name and saying Cara or Cori. It happens. Whatever.
I thought that it was made up when Neil Gaiman meant to type "Caroline" and accidentally made a typo, but liked it and kept it. Behind the Name doesn't recognize it.
Coralyn and Norrie were my top 2 girls names but we are having a boy. I've known one other Coralyn in my life and sometimes they went by Cora for short.
FWIW, there are several hits for Coraline on familysearch.org born before 1900. Obviously not a super popular name, but it seems to have been around for a while.
I kind of like Coraline but prefer just Cora. I don't like Coralynn though. I don't find it hard to believe it has been around a while but was never quite popular - it sounds refreshing.
