I lived in Anchorage, AK for a year, while my dad was doing some work there. He is retired now, but was in oil and gas. We loved it so much, they ended up keeping their house there and they spend a few months a year there.
It was tough adjusting to the darkness. But on the flip side, it is light 24 hours a day for months as well! That was crazy! 1 AM and the sun would just be shining away!
During the winter months, I picked up cross-country skiing and the trails are lit, so getting outside and getting fresh air helped. And we made a few trips to Hawaii and Florida and back home to Oklahoma to help.

Sounds like fun and quite an adventure. I bet lots of people invested in black out shades for those months where it was light 24/7.
I'd love to go to Alaska. Not to live- just to visit. Looks like a beautiful place.
