Ciara/Keira (Keer-a)...

What do you think of this name? And which spelling do you prefer? Ciara is the traditional Irish spelling. I like the spelling of Ciara just for the simple fact that my son's name begins with a "K" and I think it might be too matchy. But I do think the spelling would cause confusion. TIA!

  • The first few people I've known with the name Ciara were Irish and pronounced it Kee-rah, so that's how I always initially pronounce it too. If you live in Ireland, or if you or DH have family there/were born there, then I would go with Ciara. If you live in the US and don't have extremely strong ties to Ireland, I'd go with Keira. Going from the responses in this thread, spelling it Ciara will just confuse a lot of people if you guys are American.

Fun story: I used to live in Ireland and my (now ex) boyfriend told me that when the singer Ciara (See-air-ah) became popular, everyone (at least, he and all of his friends and family) thought her name was Kee-rah. Apparently she was interviewed for radio and the host initially pronounced her name Kee-rah and she had to correct him and say no, it's See-air-ah. Which totally confused my ex and his friends, since Ciara is a very popular name.

Agreed.  FWIW - Chira is another option.  Using Italian phonics Chi is pronounced "key", so Chira is Key-rah.

  • DH wanted an Irish name and our DD is Keira.

We say it Kee-rah.  Unfortunately people always want to spell it Kiera.

Her full name is Keira Elizabeth.

  • This is my number one pick for a girl if my husband decides he likes it. I like both spellings, but will probably go with Keira, to avoid people wanting to call her Sierra... I even know someone named Sierra that spells it Ciara.

  • I much prefer the Ciara spelling, but I do think you'll constantly be correcting people who pronounce it wrong/Americanized.

This 10000%.  If you pick an Irish name (or any ethnic name for that matter) you should use the Irish pronunciation and not the Americanized version.
