Elliot for a girl....

Opinions on using Elliot as a girls name? I love it, but everyone I ask says it is a boys name and not unisex. Does anyone know any female Elliot's?

Re: Elliot for a girl....

  • I'm not a fan (but in general I'm not a fan of unisex names, so admittedly I'm not a good one to ask)

I like the name in theory, it also makes me think of Scrubs

  • I find it odd that people have been inspired to name their daughters after a female TV character who was named Elliot because her parents wanted her to be a boy.

  • I don't tend to have the same naming style as most on this board, but personally like it a lot for a girl. I think it's a fairly "soft" sounding male name, which could easily be a girl name. And the nickname Elle or Ellie is adorable.

I don't know any in real life; the only one I've heard of is the Elliot on that show Scrubs. If you love it, go for it!

  • *sigh*

I do not know any girls/women named Elliot, and I hope to never know a girl/woman named Elliot. My opinion is that parents should leave the boy names for boys. I prefer girl names on girls and boy names on boys.

  • I like it, but I also love boy names on girls.  Besides being a name of a character on Scrubs, it is the also older daughter's name on the reality show quints by surprise.

     Thanks for everyone's honest opinions!

  • this question is asked at least once a day on the names board...usually with the same responses. however that's not my point. usualy the OP's love this name so i think in the next few years we will see quite a few girls with the name Elliot!

  • I love it. Obviously. Her NN is Ellie Bean, which, translated by DD1 turned into Ellbaleen.

I suggested it to DH because scrubs was a show I watched with my Dad in the hospital room weeks before his death, and he mentioned that he liked her name. Elliette was concived pretty much because of this (stayed at the hospital so I missed BC pill). And I wanted to honor him...but I DH and I couldnt agree on any dirivetives of Terry... so Elliette it was...but with a more feminine spelling.

I know alot of you don't like it,  but I do.

  • Not many people like it here but I have heard it floating around a lot. I don't get the whole idea of name stealing - if you raise your child to be a confident person, I can't imagine he would be bothered by a girl having his name. It's really going to be ok.

Elliot is at the top of our list for girls and I hate when people say, well I would assume you wanted a boy - why? When you name your daughter Ashley, do I assume you wanted a boy? No. Is Elliot the same as Ashley - a traditional male name turned female/unisex? Not yet - but it could be. Do I think we should change every name to be unisex? Absolutely not. This is actually one of the only ones I like on a girl.... BUT, people should be a little bit more open minded about gender and naming. Then when people say, but they'll assume she is a male - when? When they see her name on paper? Like on a resume? That is when it shouldn't matter the most - they should be looking only at her qualifications. Any other time, I'm sure they can SEE she is a girl. It is such a stupid argument. It is also dumb to suggest anyone who likes Elliot for a girl is naming her after a TV show character - a suggestion can influence someone's opinion and then they aren't using the name for that reason in particular. It also isn't the only place one can find the name... I got it from a friend's grandmother and have always thought it sounded feminine.

With that rant over, I love it.

  • Noooo! This is terrible for a girl! Leave it for the boys!

  • I do know a little girl named Elliott.  She goes by Elli most of the time though.  I hate it for a girl.  It's a boys name.  And I'm sorry PP, but just because you use a boys name on a girl doesn't make it unisex.  It just means your daughter is going to be confused for a boy most of her life.

  • I personally know more female Elliots then males, and I think it is way to feminine sounding for a boy.

I love it for a girl, and I think Elliot on girls is going to start to rise more in the rankings like Avery and Riley, so I dont think it will be a big deal.

  • With few exceptions, I really don't like boy names on girls. Elliot is not one of those exceptions. Love it for a boy though! (Thankfully the only Elliotts I have ever met were male.)

I understand that some people choose Elliot for their daughters NOT because of the Scrubs character.  However, I feel like it's safe to assume that the increase in the popularity of this name is because of the Scrubs character.  In fact, a few people on this very thread said that they liked it because of the character or they used it because of the character.

There's a difference between a name like Elliot, which was probably barely ever thought of for girls until Scrubs brought it to further attention, and a name like Edward, which currently is associated with a sparkly vampire, but has been around (and was pretty popular) before those Twilight books.

    And thus ends MY rant.

  • I know a little girl named Elliott. I don't normally like unisex names, but I do actually like Elliott for a girl. As long as you are comfortable with a few side-eyes, I would use it. Not everyone is going to like your child's name, no matter what you pick. Go for something that you love and think will age well.

That being said, I am 5'11 with a 6'4 husband, and cannot bring myself to name my daughter anything unisex. I picked the most feminine name I could find so that she wouldn't be 6'2 and named Joe. Ha. I think Elliott would be a really cute name for a girl, as long as shes never fat, petite, doesn't ever get acne, etc. However, the odds of that are slim, but if you like it, use it! I do think it has the possibility of making her life harder though. Any sign of weight gain or angst, and she will get the boy jokes.

  • Oh, and I also think it depends on where you live. I live in the South, and I know little girls with masculine names. A lot of those names are maiden names, etc. I know girls named Elliott, Carter, Massee, and Blake. I guess that might be weird to others, but its part of the culture down here.

If your area isn't use to that though, that would be something else to consider.

  • I love the name Elliot for a girl <3 not so much for a boy but that is just my oppinion I also would not go on a site like this and ask what they think because most of them will just bash any name you like I say if you like it go for it its your baby all of my children have different names that not alot of children have  I love it that way and think most of the women in this group will judge you on any name you like so do what makes you happy not what they want.

It is a boy name and is not unisex. It is a great BOY name.

That about says it, really. Please don't.

This. Elliot is a boy's name. Why anyone would need to use it for a girl, when there are plenty of girl names in the world, is beyond me. Don't do this to your daughter.
