I have a lot of questions about cloth dipers. I definatley want to use them to save money and the environment. But how do you do about them day to day? What do you do with your inserts after they are used? How often do you wash them and how? What cleaning products you use? What do you do when your out the house and have to change the diper? Do you use both cloth and disposable?
Re: Talk to me about cloth dipers.
all of this is pretty individual--I will say, my kid is 16 months old and my CDs have paid for themselves 3x over.
Day to day:
Throw used CDs in a wetbag in a garbage pail in the nursery. Carry downstairs daily. Wash 2x per week. I don't shake out inserts--they agitate out in the wash.
How to wash:
Do a 'cold cold' cycle w/o soap to rinse. Do a 'warm cold' cycle w/ soap to wash. Put it all in the dryer. Done!
Products:
I do the unthinkable and go for 'free and clear' detergent that I can buy at the grocery store. I sun on occasion. Haven't really needed much else. (we do also use flushable liners)
Out of the house:
Toss it in a travel wetbag. (the Mr. doesn't use cloth out of the house)
CD or 'sposie:
we do both. Cloth, mostly, when home. 'sposie when out for the Mr. and overnight.
I'm expecting my first baby, so I'm just starting my cloth diaper stash. I had all of the same questions that you do. There are two helpful links that answer most of your questions.
First, the frequently asked questions link is awesome: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=48640290#48640290
Second, this set of 7 youtube videos covers every type of cloth diaper imaginable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVo6SMebcX8
I hope these links help you out. Good luck.
