Stupid Ques. What are Betas?

I'm seeing posts left and right about betas.

I'm a first timer, and have no idea what these are. Should I know mine?

I don't have my 1st appt until next Wednesday, is that something they do then?

They are tests that measure the level of hcg in your blood.  They are supposed to double roughly every 24 hours in early pregnancy.  Usually, you only get them if your dr. is concerned there might be a problem, or if you have a history of miscarriages.

Correction: They are supposed to double every 48-72 hrs in early pregnancy.

Ditto the others.  It's just a blood draw.  I didn't have the draws in my first pregnancy, but did in my 2nd and 3rd (DS).  I opted out with my 4th (DD) because I think for some people (like me) they just cause more stress and panic than they're worth.  Good #s don't mean you'll have a good pregnancy.  So if your doc doesn't bring it up, I don't think it's worth requesting.
